Renting versus point transfer?

We are DVC holders, but we were looking at getting a transfer of a few points to extend our stay. Looking on the rent board, most points are for rent and not for transfer...

Does it make much of a difference if we rent point versus getting them transferred in our DVC account? I know I won't be making my own ressie, but other than that, does it change anything?

TIA :goodvibes

I suspect that any points available for rent are also available for transfer. In a transaction between two DVC owners, a transfer is an easier and more manageable transaction than renting.

The caveat to that is that you are only allowed one transfer (in or out) per account per year. So someone who has already done one transfer either way could not do another.

It's also possible that an owner would not want to give up their one transfer per year for a small number of points. But the only way to know that is to ask.

I would contact some of the people offering points and see if they will do the transfer you need.

If you rent a reservation from another member for the additional nights you want, you will end up with two reservations. You can call MS and ask to have the two reservations linked to alert the room assigner to put you in the same room for the entire stay. You will have to check out and check in again on the day you transition from one reservation to the other.

If you get a transfer, the points will be placed in your account and you can add the additional nights to your existing reservation. You end up with one continuous reservation, no linking required and no check out/check in required part way through your stay.

ETA: Reservations can be linked only if both reservations are for EXACTLY the same room type and booking category. For example if one reservation is for a "standard view" and the other is not, they cannot be linked. If one reservation is for a 2BR lockoff and the other is for a dedicated 2BR, they cannot be linked.

When you rent a reservation from another member, at no time do you own the reservation. They own it at all times. You can't call about it to make requests or add the dining plan, etc. You would be able to do that for the portion of your stay that you make with your own or points transferred in.

Hope you don't mind, but I had a question about renting vs transfers too. I was how the transaction works if you transfer points? I have a little over 100 points that I was considering renting, but it sounds like a transfer would be easier. How is payment made?

Need to add that these points were borrowed from my 2014 UY. So not sure if they can be transferred.

Need to add that these points were banked already. So not sure if they can be transferred.

Sorry, another question:

Can I take points that were already borrowed from 2014 DEC UY and transfer them into another owned contract for DEC 2015 UY? I have 2 for the same resort and same UY. I just read that others have been successful transferring points into a second contract they also own. I hope my question makes sense as I am a bit confused.

Banked points cannot be transferred.

The dvc terms state that you cannot accept compensation for a points transfer, so member services won't be able to help if things go wrong.

Otherwise, it's pretty straight forward. You call member services and tell them to transfer points to another member.

So sorry; wrong term used. These were points that were borrowed from 2014 but our vacation was cut short. I have a little more than 100 points that cannot be banked. Can those be transferred to either my other contract or to another member? If not, then I am guessing my options would be to use them by next year, or flip them into RCI to avoid holding?

Transferred points retain their UY and home resort. You can transfer current year points to another member, but they will still expire at the end of the UY if you failed to bank them to use them.

Make sure you use terms correctly. Borrowing means getting points from a future UY to make a reservation in the current UY. I'm not sure I understand what you mean when you say "These were points that were borrowed from 2014 ".

One more issue with transferring points. You cannot borrow points that have been transferred in to make a reservation. For example if you need 2014 points to make a reservation, you can't transfer 2015 points to use for that reservation.

You state that you have two Dec UY contracts for the same resort. Normally those would also be under the same membership in which case you would have no need to transfer the points from one contract to the other. Are they actually under two different memberships, perhaps because the contracts are titled differently?

I'm not sure you can transfer borrowed points but perhaps MS makes exceptions when you own both of the memberships involved in the transfer.

ETA: What you cannot do is "unborrow" the points, even via a transfer. If they were borrowed from your Dec 2014 UY into your Dec 2013 UY they will expire on Nov 30, 2014.

Keep in mind that transferred points will most likely not show up on your MDE account.

To use transferred points you will have to call MS and makee any reservations thru them.
