renting points

I used a service advertised on the boards to help rent my points, but I was also under the impression that they look after the room reservations, dining plan, Magical Express for their cut of the point value they are taking.

Sadly, the only thing they do is find someone to rent, which on the boards a DVC member can do quite easily. I've both rented points before I was member, and see others posting points for rent all the time. I wish I had gone this route and it would have saved me a bunch of unnecessary time because of their inefficiency. The aren't really doing very much at all to take their cut, and the DVC member is still left with making the bulk of the work. They can't even be efficient by making sure the rentor as all their ducks in a row at the time of the request. They send emails saying "add on this", which require phone calls to them and to Disney.

Do yourself a favour and, if renting points, DIY.

All the services do is link up a member with someone wanting to "rent points". They have no access to your reservation that you made for the non-member. They cannot make a request, add the dining plan, add ME.

If you want to find your own "renter" you are free to do that.

My points were rented in less than 12 hours and for more $ than I could have gotten on my own. I have done it myself in the past and it was not as easy. When the "middle-man" contacted me, confirmation of availability was already done. I simply logged on and entered in the families information, forwarded the information to the "middle-man" and had my money via PayPal within hours. They also covered the PayPal fees. Can't get easier than that!

I could not be happier with the process!

If you are worried about the quick turnaround, then perhaps a service is for you. I had more than six months to work with, so time was not an issue. Efficiency was an issue. The start of the process they had two different families, but they didn't provide the names and info for the one, leaving me to believe that both reservations that were for the same resort and overlapping in days were for the same. I make the reservations, contact the service, only to find out that they didn't provide the right info. In the months since, they ask for one family to add the dining plan, but I have to contact the service for the credit card info (I was suprised they'd give me another person's card, including security digit), and then two weeks later they ask me to make dining plan for the other family, with the same proviso to contact them for a gift card info as "email is not secure". Too many emails, calls, and others is not worth the money they asked.

People posting their own points would be getting the same amount with less hassles.

This has been my experience over the five months I've been dealing with these two reservations. They have a ridiculously easy way of making money of the deal. Just saying.

Your problems are with the renters, not the brokers. You made a reservation, then the buyer wanted changes, additions, corrections. You get stuck making those or cancel the reservation and refund the money.

The broker does need to tel the renter than all sales are final and they need to provide all the information up front. Not sure which broker you were working with, but I think you need to let the broker know about your issues with the renter.

But you wanted to be a "travel agent" by renting out your points...:confused3 Hopefully, you won't be stuck with issues after the reservation starts. Like trying to upgrade when they check in using more of your points, damaging the villa, leaving a unpaid credit card bill...

I do agree with your comments. While I am grateful their services exist for those not comfortable renting I found renters quicker than the services. Also around 90% of the requests were for people wanting to rent within the 7 mos. timeframe. That doesn't work for me. I always have found renters within the 11 -9 month booking timeframe.

That is a small minority who stiff the renter. And yes it's always possible to cross the street and get hit by a bus.....

These issues can all come up when you rent on your own as well. It is not the service, it is the renters. Why do you care that they are making easy money?

The broker handles the contract and collecting the money for the member in return for their cut. There is some security for the renter because the broker only gives the member 50% upfront and holds 50% for after the trip is over (at least that is the way David works). The broker does not have access to your account. At one time, the broker asked to be made an associate member on your account so that they could access your account but DVC changed the rules on that. Would you really want to make the broker an associate member? I don't think so.

It's not a matter of efficiency or inefficiency on the part of the rental services. It is impossible for them to make reservations, add the dining plan or arrange Magical Express. DVC will not permit anyone but the member to do those things. None of the rental services claim that they will - quite the opposite in fact. When I worked with David's, I'm pretty sure I was given information on what their responsibilities and mine were before I agreed to let them rent my points.

What they did do for their fee was find me potential renters, deal with all their emails and questions, prepare very professional and clear cut rental agreements for both parties, give me every bit of information I needed from the renter to make the reservation, and handle payment. They were a godsend, and worth every penny. My total time output was about 15 minutes, all told.

I rented myself, once. It was enough to convince me that I never wanted to do it again.

I've been very happy with the rental service advertised on the boards. They found me renters for my points in holding. Pay Pal works great.

The services advertised on this board are doing just that-providing a service. It's your choice to use them or not. I've used them, and my experience was nothing but wonderful. I would use them again in a heartbeat. Maybe I was fortunate enough to have renters who knew what they wanted and made those choices upfront.
The next time we plan on cruising, we will use David's again to sell our points to get cash to pay for the cruise...

I've given David's people points to rent out for me. I couldn't have been happier. They collect the money....I don't need to worry about that. The let the prospective renter know the rules. I go online and fill out the DVC room request...that's it. I haven't had to make any changes for the renter. I am more than happy to let David's company take care of all that 'other' stuff. People decide to add the ddp later all the time. No big deal.

Renting points is like any other business transaction. What works for one doesn't work for another. I like that David 's find the renters, collects the info and the funds. It works for me and was profitable.

Thank you everyone for this thread. I did book a cruise and will be looking to recoup some of the $ by renting points. I have read David's thread and I am now sure I'll be using the service for my excess points that will help offset the cost of the cruise.

I'm glad you have all had success. I filled out the forms, sent them to David twice and never heard back. I was never able to rent my points out through them. I'm now renting points to friends and family. I'm afraid soon I'll have extra points and need a quick way to unload. Not sure what I'll do then.

That is strange. Granted, I've only used David's once - but I called and emailed before I rented through him and they were very quick with responses. In fact, from the time I decided to rent my points until they were rented was less than 24 hours - and that included the back and forth to sign the agreements.

I would recommend sending a followup email and explain that you are considering renting but are leery because of their past non-responsiveness.

Hope that works, and hope it all works out for you.

I am really sorry to hear that you experienced problems with our forms. I can only think that we sent you agreements via return e-mail and they went to your spam folder.

We repeatedly send out agreements for a set number of times and if the member does not respond, we assume they have lost interest or found another avenue for their points. I'd really like to find out where the miscommunication was. Can you call my team, toll free at 800-610-5791 and speak with Kelly, Donna or Melissa and have them search our records for your application? They will be more than happy to dig into this for us. If I were not traveling in Scotland at the moment, I would certainly have you call me direct.

~ David
