Lets say that I want to take 17 people to BLT during Adventure season. I figured it out that I would want a Grand Villa and a Studio, and I think it is 706 points. If I purchase at 235 points, then I would be 1 point short. If I purchase at 236, I'm two points over. This assumes I am using 3 use year points to pay for this family trip.

Is there a way to borrow or rent 1 point from another fellow member? I'll probably just get 236 points, but the underlying question still exist...If I am close but not able to make a reservation...can I borrow 5, 10, 25 points to add with my points to make my reservation?

Everyone's going to be a bit different, but just think about how you think you'll be vacationing. I'm in the process of buying in, and for us we plan on being at WDW 2 out of every 3 years (live in Chicago so unlikely to make the trip each year). We wanted to have a full week in a 1BR on each trip, and we typically travel in May, so that ends up being anywhere from 220-280 pts depending on resort and view.

We are trying to buy 160, as for every 3 years we'll have 480 pts, and we figure ROUGHLY that each trip will use 240 pts - so that was our rule of thumb. Bear in mind that depending on your vacation habits your numbers will change.

Now we may find that we have to pay cash for one night if we use too many points on one trip, or that maybe we won't necessarily use all of them and have some left over to bank - but as a ballpark figure that's what works for us.

There are many here that can and will offer some great advice (especially the mods and other folks that have answered these same questions over and over again :lmao:), make sure you take advantage of their knowledge because they are great about helping folks learn about DVC and sharing their experiences.

Good luck, hope this helps,

Chris

I'd go with couple extra points and you may want to buy 10 - 20% more points then you were planning as sort of an extra bit of insurance in the event there may be adjustments to points charts in upcoming years ( adjustments have been made to 2010 points charts & many members have found they need approx. somewhere in this range to make trips they usually make, but also, there are members who will use less points as a result of changes to 2010 points charts ). Or if you find in future you need more points on a regular basis to cover your travel habits you can purchase add-on contract(s) directly from Disney at minimum of 25 points for cash purchase or 50 pts minimum if you want Disney's financing.

If you are going to use banking&borrowing to put together enough points for trip every third year, for the borrowing in of points MS will only borrow in the number needed to give you what you need to cover the reservation so any extra points you don't use you could then bank for a future trip or you could transfer extra unused points to a DVC member who may be in situation where they are short some points.

Also, you can arrange for a transfer of points from another DVC member to get the couple of points that you may be short for the reservation. You are allowed 1 transfer of points per Use Year of either points being transferred IN to your account from another member or points transferred OUT of your account to another member; you cannot do both in same Use Year.

Just a thought, but are they really advertising the GV at BLT as holding 13 rather than 12? If they only hold 12, plus 4 in a studio, that would only be 16. So if you need room for 17, you may have to get a one bedroom instead of the studio.

You can have another member transfer a single point into your account. The problem is finding a member willing to do it, since you can only make one transfer a year. What you would probably do is "rent" the studio from another member.

What we ended up doing was cutting our extended family vacation short by a day - we gave them six nights instead of seven. That left us points in our third (borrowed) year that we bank and will use the following year. We stayed one extra night, and my sister chose to fly in early and stay two nights at a different resort....but I couldn't pick up that extra room for an extra night - not enough poiints.

Another year it was 'just us' and we wanted an extra night. Paid cash for it.

Looking at the charts, I see 706 points gets a MK view GV and a MK view Studio during Adventure season for 5 weeknights plus 1 weekend night, for a total of 6 nights.

I presume this is what you're planning. I couldn't find any other combination that came out to exactly 706 points.

That's for a reservation in 2009, so you must be looking at either September or the first couple of weeks of December. If you're looking at December, according to our unofficial reservations availability board, people have reported showing no MK view Studios at BLT are available for a contiguous 6 day period.

If you're looking for 2010, then the point charts are different. I see Adventure season for the same 6-days presumed above would be 721 points.

Sorry, I meant to say 16 not 17! Still a lot of people :)

I was planning on 12 in a Grand Villa (though 2 of the 16 could be 3 or under) and 4 in the Studio.

Yes, I was using the 2009 charts and then I did the math with the 2010 charts. I talked to my better half tonight, and we both could have sworn that out guide stated that the point totals would not change, but the times associated with each "season" would.

I think i do need to plan on purchasing a few more points than just the right number. I'm expecting a call from my guide tomorrow, I'll have a few questions for him. One of wich, if this is my first buy in, does it make sense to purchase 160 @ BLT and 90 or so at AKV?
