Renting Points/Room Charging Privileges

We'll be renting points from a business associate of my DH for a March 2011 stay. He just told me that he has a new policy when renting points to not allow any charges on the room key because he had a bad experience. Someone who he rented points to left an unpaid room charge bill of over $600. Disney is holding the him, DVC owner, responsible for the unpaid room charges, and won't allow him to make any reservations before the bill is settled.

I'm not too worried about not having room charge privileges, we'll be on the dining plan and usually pay cash for any purchases. The one thing we will need is internet in the room for my DH's work. My question is as a non-DVC member staying on rented points, I know that internet is not free. Is there a way to pay for internet in the room without having charging privileges on my room key? Can I put down a cash amount to be used against any room charges?

Thanks!

Internet is charged to room. Not sure there is any way to do otherwise. What I am also not sure of is how he can possibly prevent you from doing room charges since it is generally the choice of the person who shows up to get the room. And what I also don't know is how he can the make the reservation at all if they "won't allow him to make any reservations before the bill is settled."

I am just wondering... In a non DVC room, if you want to have room charging priviledge, you need to leave your credit card info .

Does that also apply to DVC rented points room ? If yes, I do not see any problem..

I'm not sure he will have any way to prevent charging privileges on your room key. As long as you leave a credit card the resort will provide charging privilege if you want it.

He fully controls the reservation until you check-in at the resort and then he will have no control over any aspect of the stay since it is in your name.

Good luck!

I know that you can put cash down towards your room bill. I would assume that if you do this in advance, it will cover the internet charges.

As others have said, however, when you arrive, you will be allowed to attach the credit card to the reservation.

I agree with the others, there is no way an owner can prevent a renter from doing room charges if they present a CC. If that CC is declined, it is a risk the owner assumes by renting. It is simply part of the process.

I aslo agree with those that said if DVC has prevented him from making reservations until it is paid, they would also cancel/put a hold on any already existing reservations until it is paid. It sounds as if the owner is not fully aware of how DVC works, and the risks and rules that go with renting.

Thank you for all of the replies. He is going to pay this outstanding bill in order to make my (and any other) reservation.

It's good to know that we can either put cash down or a cc at check in for room charges. It makes sense that he controld the reservation until we check in, but once we check in the reservation is our responsibility. Not being able to get internet in the room would be a deal breaker for DH, since he really needs it for work.

I agree that I don't know if he fully understands DVC even though he has been an owner for years. He said that he tried to make my reservation already when he learned of these issues, but we are 2 weeks shy of the 7 month mark, so he couldn't have made the reservation yet. We are looking to book OKW, not his home resort.

Thanks again for all the help.
