renting points out maybe, a few questions

I have a couple of questions and I hope this is the right place to post them.

First we just bought our DVC points last fall and are taking our first trip this October.

Next year though, DH wants to go back in early December again and wants to stay at the Wilderness lodge. But he doesn't want to stay in the villas, he wants to stay in a regular courtyard view room in the main building.

For our beach vacation in 2012 we are looking at going to Aruba with another couple.

So it doesn't look like we will be using our points next year. I was actually thinking of renting all of them and using the funds to pay for part of the other trips. But I have no idea what the best way is to go about renting them. Is it best to do it yourself on the rent/trade board here or use an outside service like David's or what.

Any advice/comments are welcome as well as experiences anyone has had renting points. Thanks!

I have rented out my points 2 times on this board and found it to be an easy, pleasant experience. I would say try it yourself first, then if you aren't satisfied with the process, contact someone to do it for you.

I also rented out points last year for the first time for a Cruise on the Dream with my 2 children and their families.I was nervous at first but I followed the rental board for awhile and saw how fast most people were able to rent their points. So I rented/transferred about 700 points and everything went smoothly and it only took 3 days to make it happen. I saved a ton of money paying for my cruise with cash instead of points. I would do it again if I needed to.:cloud9:

Renting out points from the DIS is not as simple as before. Go to the rent/trade board and read up on all the new rules. I do know you need to have posted at least 50 times in the last six months or there is a fee to pay. You could use David's or try Mouse Owners. I have rented many times for the same purpose as yourself. Need money to pay for other trips. Never had a problem.

Renting points is a good idea if you don't need them that year and you don't want to bank them.

As for doing it yourself, I liken it to what you do with your old car when you buy a new one. If you want to take all the hassle out of the transaction, use it as a trade-in. You might not make as much but it is easy and over with quickly.

If you want max value, you sell it yourself with all the potential headaches that can bring.

Which one are you? That would probably help you decide whether to rent the points yourself or go through someone like David.

We've done both successfully and they are both valid methods. Good luck. :)

Thanks everyone! We're still trying to decide for sure about the Aruba trip, but I'm almost certain we will be doing the Wilderness Lodge for our Disney trip.

I think it might be worth it to try to rent them ourselves if theres a significant difference in what you make. I'll have to check into the other two options to see what their cost it.

Am I correct to assume that you will get more per point by listing them as early as possible allowing people to book farther out and have a better chance of getting the resort they want? The points expire in date removed.

Why do you want to pay for a regular room at WL instead of using your points? I could see if you were out of points and still wanted to go to Disney, but to have them and choose not to use them seems odd to me. I'm not trying to be snarky; just curious! :goodvibes

Another option is post a sign where you work. I have done this several times at my work and have always found someone wanting to go to Disney. Of course it depends on your employer, and how many employees you have. But I then rent to someone I know and we work out the payment for the points. Takes the unknown factor out of it.

Price really is up to you. It amazes me that people still rent for under $10.00 pp. I mean can you imagine getting a two bedroom for say less than a regular room at grand floridian. Yes, it is best to put your points up for rent as soon as you can.

I know it makes no sense, but my DH really wants to stay in a courtyard view room. We stayed in one a few years ago in December and he loved it. I told him we could just try to use our points to stay in the villas and still be at the wilderness lodge, but he really wants to stay in the regular courtyard view room. Since he isn't a big Disney fan and really goes just to make me and the kids happy I figure I can do my best to accomodate his two requests, December and WL Courtyard view room.

I work in a small office but that's a good idea, I could at least ask around and see. Maybe I'll get lucky. That would be so much easier. I'll get DH to mention it at his work also.

Thanks! I don't think DH would be willing to let them go for less than $10 a point. If it came to that we would probably just bank them into the next year.

Even at $10 a point its a great deal. We are taking our friends with us this trip and splitting a two bedroom for 7 nights. They paid us $1400. $10/point for half the points of the room. I think that's a pretty good price for 7 nights in a deluxe resort on the monorail. Add in the value of the extra space and the kitchen with 5 kids and its a pretty awesome deal.
