Renting points for DCL money?

We are not members yet but one thing I have thought about before buying is that while I love WDW, I also really love taking DCL cruises and I don’t know that I want to commit to one or the other type of vacation. Does anyone feel like it is sensible to buy DVC even if you end up renting your points for DCL money instead of doing a WDW vacation often?

For example, if we rented out say 125 points for 2-3 Years for $13/ point (BLT). we would get say up to $4800 or so to put towards a cruise but $2200 of that would go towards three years worth of dues

I’ve done this a number of times to help offset the price of a cruise. It’s definitely better to do it that way vs. going through DVC to book a cruise using points.

You should take the purchase and due cost into account to see if renting is worth it. What would you make if you invested that same money?

It's one of the things I love about my DVC, the flexibility to rent points when I want to (or need to), but I'm not sure about going in knowing that you will frequently be renting out points. I have, however, rented my points for cruises several times.

The bottom could fall out of the rental market at any time. I would not purchase DVC with the mindset that I was going to just rent out the points. I have, however, rented when I found myself with more points than I had time to vacation. Or when a contract I bought had points expiring before I could get away for a trip. It's nice to know that I have that option but it's not something I do regularly.

What do you forsee that would cause the bottom of the rental market to fall out?

Consider buying enough points to go every other year. You can then cruise every other year (paying cash) and not worry about converting points to cash.

If you plan to cruise more often than visit WDW, don't buy DVC, just rent points for your stays or pay cash.

I have rented out my points a handful of times, and it is some work. Some renters are very easy. Others require some more attention. Just realize it isn’t, “You’re booked and confirmed, now leave me alone.” There will be additional questions, requests, issues as well. Some more than others.

If you don’t want to mess with renting them directly yourself you might want to check https://www.dvcrequest.com/. I’ve used them a number of times and have rented out my points within a couple of days, no problem. You do have to make the reservation yourself, and anything else that requires direct interaction with member services, but they handle all the rest for you.
