Renting points and cc on file question

I rented points from a DVCer for our upcoming stay (long before we bought ourselves). I have just finished reading a thread on the Operations board about a renter defaulting on her room charges.

My questions is, when we check in, if we use our cc for charging privileges, will that cc be linked to the DVC owner at all?

Obviously, I intend to pay my charges, but I am wary about the possibility that my cc number may end up in a stranger's file, whereby at some future stae, it could perhaps be used inadvertedly to pay for charges not belonging to me.

If this may be a possibility, then I might prefer to not use the cc. Is there some way to check in without leaving a cc, and then not have room charge privileges?

I don't see how it could possibly be used by a DVC member. Disney is not going to give a secure number out. They could be sued for sure.

I have read the entire Thread you are posting about. I don't understand Disney giving room charging to someone that has a bad credit card. I do have a issue with that, then saying they are not responsible. :confused3 Disney may need to not allow charging on point stays. I know that thought is going to go over big!:rotfl2:

I always apply a cc to my account and always get the same approval amount, I have wondered about that. When I take my whole family, buy the DDP, the amount barely covers it.

You don't have to provide a credit card #. When I travel with friends, we usually do not do room charging, we all just take care of our own.

Why would DVC want to not allow CC's on member stays. That would be a huge disadvantage to owners. Truth is that someone could cancel their card after they gave it to the front desk, open a dispute on the charges, claim it was lost or stolen and it wasn't them.

Without a long rant about renting, what is the ever talked about rule..."takes a lot of trust from both parties".....

Truth is that you can be burnt as an owner in a number of ways, such as late check outs costing you more points, damages in the room and even the room charges. Disney isn't here to manage people that want to rent their points.

It would be an even bigger disadvantage to Disney---room charge turns out to encourage more guest spending.

No, there will be no way for the member you are renting from to have any access to or knowledge of your in room account - including your credit card information. That is a secure system.

In the case cited in another thread, the issue arose because the credit card was supposedly reported by the holder as being lost, which invalidated any charges applied by Disney. When the card is presented, Disney just verifies that it is a valid card, but the charges are not actually applied until either the limit is reached (at which point the same limit is reapplied) or the guest checks out of the resort. Since the $1500 limit was not reached by that guest, the card was not charged until checkout and with express checkout, the guest never had to stop at the desk to settle up the account. The DVC member they rented from still does not know anything about the credit card they used - only that Disney claims not to have been paid by the guest who rented the room from that member.

With rentals, the renter bears most of the risk up until check-in at the resort and then the member bears most of the risk that the bill will be paid and the room will not be damaged - in which case, the member may be held responsible for charges incurred by their renter.

Oh, I agree it would be a huge disadvantage to owners. You do see the laughing man that I posted when I said it. It was said in humor. I use CC's for everything and I do mean everything. I have put my check book up. I use Skymiles for all my trips, Disney Rewards points for my Disney trips, chase points in two ways, cash and airfare. NCL points for cruises, RCCL points for Cruises, we just went to the Med for tax and port charges.

I do rent from time to time...I feel that I know my families pretty well by the time they check in. Never have I had a problem. I will say this, If I had a situation before hand, where a email wasn't being answered or payment not received when it was suppose to, Redflags would go off for me.
There has never been a reason for CC information to be passed on to me from Disney, nor would they. I have even had people offer me their CC information. I really don't want to take it, even though we can process it at our office. Oh, I forgot, I did take it one time.

As you said, it takes trust on both sides. Not trying to make light of the situation, I do wish there was a way to protect the owner better. If Disney doesn't want DVC owners to rent, then they should stop it all together. JMHO

We have rented from 3 different owners and always keep a credit card on file for charges ... never a problem.
