Renting out points? Which is better?

I was wondering which is a better way to rent out points? Just rent out the points on a first come, first serve basis or should I get a reservation for a popular time and rent out the reservation? It seems both have their pros and cons. I would like your opinion.

IMO, You might be able to command a higher $/pt. if you had a reservation during peak season vs. renting out the points. However, reservation might take longer to rent out since the dates are specific but try it both ways and see :wizard:

Because your post count is low you probably will get by on this one without a flameproof suit. :firefight :firefight The folks on this board really frown upon people making reservations for high demand periods only for renting out on speculation. The Rent/Trade board also will not let you post a reservation prior to six months before the starting date. See this thread: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=63551

My recommendation would be to post it for the points only. I think the best option is to find a member who can have the points transferred to their account. That way there is nothing to worry about once the transaction is complete.

I have done both - rented just points and rented a certain time.

my problem was I wanted to use that time - but my brother cancelled on me in Oct - it was for a Thanksgiving BWV standard view. I decided to rent it if I could do it quickly 14 days. the first time I posted nothing - so I moved that post up at week later - got a bunch of takers.

I don't go with the first one. Try to offer less money then wanted a 1-bedroom instead of the studio I had. The next one was much nicer a lady and I would certainly rent to her anytime!!!

with the points I had even more problems. I listed certain times that I would rent it - Sept - Nov. Didn't want to deal with Easter or Christmas time when the point cost are high. People were constantly wanted me to try for summer or spring break. I also said studios only. Well one person wanted a 2 or 3 bedroom for 2 weeks in January.

People don't read your ads!!!

so just saying points is probably your best method. I like little contracts so if someone cancels on me it is not a problem.

besides my brother I just had one cancelation. It was for the first week in Dec and I could rerent it so that one wasn't even a problem.

don't ask about my brother he has cost me a fortune over the years cancelling a month or less before we leave.....

Gee SpiceyCat...
maybe it is time to trade in that brother!
My pet peeve is 'family' who cancel on you and don't even bother to ask if it is going to harm you financially.
Hope you only 'offer' to help him get reservations next time he says he wants to come...Of course you could 'let him' use your AP discount lodging IF he puts it on HIS CC!!!! :goodvibes

As for renting out points, the very easiest is to transfer your points into another DVC members account...takes 5 minutes max and everyone is happy.

I would also recommend you hang out on the Boards for a while, get a feeling for when high demand times are for DVC (they are NOT the same as high demand for WDW in general in many cases), get a realistic observation for when resorts are sold out, etc. Figure out how the system works in real life.

It often seems that folks with low post numbers jump in pretty quick to make offers to potential renters when the renter wants BWV standard at 4 months out or BCV during Food & Wine or a GV during Christmas Week. I'm sure the frustration level on both sides can get pretty high when offers are made or negotiated on deals that just aren't going to be available.

I want to thank all of you who have responded. I will continue to keep an eye out for what generally works before renting out points. But I guess the point (no pun intended) of this post was to find out if it was better to obtain a ressie for one of the peak times and try renting that out or to just put the points out there to rent because in the final analysis, although I can see what is being offered I don't know what was successful.

If anyone else would like to provide some input, please feel free. I would like to hear from people that regularly rent points. Especially those of you that have 600, 700 or more points and you definitely rent out your unused points. I am looking to purchase additional points; however, I know that some years I will not use all of my points and even though I could bank them eventually I will have to rent them (use 'em or lose 'em).
