Hello out there in DVC world. A friend of mine just offered me 200 points to use because her family won't be using them this year and am not sure if they can be banked or not. Anyway, I told her I was totally interested in taking them as my family and I are in the middle of planning a Disney vacation. What good timing. I asked her how much she wants for them and she asked me what I wanted to pay that she is basically a new DVC member and wasn't sure what to ask for them. I want to be fair to her. Is there a going rate? I don't want to offend her by low-balling a price. Would covering a year of her maintennce fees be appropriate to ask or is there some formula that I am unaware of? It would be greatly appreciated for some friendly advice. Thanks

The points are useless to you unless you are a member and she can transfer them to you. Plus you will only be able to use as many as a reservation requires.

Your friend will need to make the reservation for you. She will need to add the dining plan and Magical Express for you if you need these.

Your friend needs to learn more about DVC if she is going to make any sense out of her membership. Otherwise, it will be a big waste of money for her. But in reality, I'd bet she is no different from many members and that is what DVC counts on. Points that go unused.

I'd charge my friend's what I paid in dues for unused points. Not the "going rental rate" for strangers.

Depending in the resort owned, the maintenance fees for 2010 range from $3.78 - $6.61 per point. Many are able to rent on our Rent/Trade Board for around $10 per point ($8-12) without any problem. Some of the "value" would depend on when the points will expire and whether they have any other restrictions (Holding Account, Reservation Status) which would limit their use.

As noted, the points themselves are of no use to you. Your friend will need to handle all aspects of making the reservation - including making it in your name - since you have no access to the reservation system as a non-member.

If they are just trying to salvage something for their points, I think I'd offer $8 per point - a very fair price for both you and your friend.

Have a great trip! :)
