On a different thread, I just read that someone rented DVC points from an owner and got BWV cheaper than a standard deluxe room. How do you do that? That truly sounds magical!

If you go to the DisHome page, look over on the left and click on DVC/Time Share, click on it and then scroll down to the Points Calculator and click on it. Figure out how many points you need for the time you are going. Keep in mind that points for Fridays and Saturdays are almost double what they are for Sun-Thurs. I think most people who rent will rent Sun-Thurs (5 nights) and then pay cash Fri-Sat either at that resort or a cheaper resort. Anyway after you know how many points you need, go to the Rent/Trade DVC Points Forum and either post or look at the posts of DVC owners who have posted points and PM them.
For example I'm renting points at BWV for May 15-May 20. According to the Points Calculater that will require 65 points for a studio with a preferred view. Points 'usually' run around $10.00/point so that would be $650.00 for five nights for a studio with a preferred view at BWV ($130.00/night). Sometimes you can find people who for whatever reason (points about to expire, they need money for something else, or they're just not going to be able to use their points) will have points $8.50-$9.00/point and others who will rent for higher $11.00-$12.00/points, but the norm is around $10.00/point. I would look for someone who had alot of posts on the DisBoards (over 100) and then you might want to read some of those posts to get a feel for that person and their love of Disney. This is not to say that someone with just a few posts, may not be honest, but I just felt safer going with someone who had been here for awhile and not someone who had just joined and only had a few posts (and only about renting points). There is alot of trust involved in both sides. The lady I'm working with made the ressie through member services, mailed me the ressie, then I sent her a certified check for the total. It has gone very smoothly so far and I would not hesitate to rent from her again, but theoretically the owner could cancel the ressie on you after they get your money. They control the ressie until you check in, so some risk is involved, which is why I think it's cheaper. I think most people here on the DisBoards are basically honest poeple who love Disney though. From what I've read it is usually the rentee who backs out or causes problems. I think this is a shame since as a rentee we would be getting a great place to stay much cheaper than we could through Disney. We may be filling a need the renters have, but we are getting a great service from them in return. Alot of people are able to stay at deluxe resorts that otherwise couldn't afford it. I know I got a great deal and am really appreciative.
You do need to be very sure of your dates though, because you don't get the liberal cancellation policy that Disney gives and could lose your money if you must cancel and if you or the renter can't rent the points out again. It depends on when the points expire and if the renter would be willing to work with you. Personally I think they do enough calling MS and making the ressie. I plan on renting points again for my trips in late Sept/early Oct and early Dec. You seldom hear of a rental going bad. Good luck!
