I hope I am posting in the right place. I am renting DVC points from an individual. I have read through the forum, but just wanted to double check. The reservation has been transferred to me in My Disney Experience. I am getting ready to pay the rest of the trip off, but was wondering if the DVC owner can cancel the reservation at anytime? Any other tips for paying and not getting scammed.

They could cancel, but that's the risk you take when you rent from an individual. If you did your research about the renter in advance (references, solid contract, etc.) you should be ok.

The DVC points owner owns that reservation until the moment you check in. They could cancel it, change the names on the reservation, change it to a different resort if one is available, almost anything they want.

As mentioned, you need to feel comfortable and trust the owner when dealing with a rental.

As long as you are the one that made first contact in response to the offer to rent a reservation, that is a good first step

But yes, the reservation is in control of the DVC owner until you check in and while eaten if they cancel out on you, there is no recourse via DVC.

Renting can save you money but there are risks that do not exist when booking with Disney.

It looks like you have already "done the deed", so to speak.

My advice would have been to look for an owner with a history who has been around for awhile... you may pay more but feel more secure. Some will even provide references, if that's your thing. As others have pointed out, you will never actually own that reservation so the owner can cancel, rename, etc. at any point up to check in. And if they fail to pay their dues, the reservation is cancelled by DVC directly.

You need to feel confident in the owner you are using. Hopefully you chose such a person for your rental.

You can verify ownership here:

Obviously, this is only WDW points.

But yes, the owner can cancel on you. There are risks to renting. When I rented, I tried to minimize risk by splitting the trip into different owners and made sure I could verify those owners online. That way at least the whole trip isn't a scam?

Research research research. If you find someone here that has a good price for something you're looking for, look at their post history, do a search on their username and see what other people say. If you found someone at another site, do the same thing.

Get their real name and phone number, and search a bit on The Internet with that, just to make sure they're on the up and up.

If I'm saying do a little snooping, yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. Good renters should have been around long enough that they won't try to hide who they are, and that people in similar circles should have said something good about them. A public glowing review helps immensely. I'm not saying to find their work address and where they ate for dinner last week, that's way too far, but to at least get a feel for the person.

Ask for a contract, and have it filled out with dates, number of points, and dollar totals. What's the cancellation policy?

How is payment done? Paypal/Venmo/Zelle/Google Pay/Apple Pay are fine. Wiring money via Western Union is not.

Ask for references. I had one renter (not from here) who said that he doesn't provide references due to privacy concerns... ???? I ran away.

But, stay comfortable throughout the entire process. If you don't feel comfortable, don't do it. It's too much money to just have go up in smoke.

Generally speaking, once you get inside of 30 days, the chances of them cancelling the reservation on you go down a lot. After that date, the DVC points go into holding, and have a very limited use left to them.

I had a renter start texting me information they found searching for me not related to disney or the reservation. I felt like they were trying to intimidate me to make sure I didn't do anything sketchy even though we have rented many times without issue. That was a bit overboard.

And honestly, if I had a renter do that I might decide to cancel the contract and refund money., unless they were someone who had had rented to many times like you.

Bur f it contained then I would for sure tell them to stop and use email for questions.

That seems very creepy to me. I'd also refund and suggest the renter book with Disney.
