Renting DVC points

I am not sure how other folks operate, but I think the standard is a deposit, with the full amount due before the 30 day window. At least that's how we roll. We've only rented three times, our teacher, bless her heart, was having the hardest time arranging her schedule, and based on the contract, we could have kept all her money, but we didn't. Not sure about other DVC folks, but we love Disney and want to share it. DVC Members do NOT MAKE MONEY from renting points, at least we didn't. Generally DVC Members, at least we believe, do it to re-coup costs in a year when maybe they can't go as often as they would like.

Ok..sorry to hijack you're thread OP..but when someone rents points..do they have to have all of the money upfront or can they make arrangements on payments??

It depends on who you rent from. Who I rented from required so much down, then once confirmation and reservation numbers were recieved I made final payment.

Ok!! Thank you so much for the information and DizneyNut..I may be contacting u in the future!!

When we rented last, we had ONE DGC, we now have FOUR, so our renting came to a hault! Most DVC Members are GREAT and I couldn't imagine any of them taking advantage of anyone's misfortune, but sometimes it happens I guess. Right now, we are juggling trips with Disney Cruises, and it's like HOLY MOSES, what in the world! The Good Lord has blessed us in so many ways, so if we can help someone else share a wish, we always have and we always will.

You can find all the info on a thread on the DVC board about renting points.

I have rented points from several different DVC members from the DIS rent/trade board and have had nothing but the most positive, marvelous, magical experiences :cloud9: I do always verify DVC ownership just for my own peace of mind pixiedust:

I have no problem doing laundry in vacation. I actually just did it this morning as we always spend a week around the 4th at our summer place. The only problem with this one is we would only be getting a studio. There is only us and our daughter do a 1 bedroom just doesn't make sense.

For those staying in DVC studio's, all resorts have a free laundry room, just supply your own detergent and if the resort has a coin slot machine you just push in the coin slot without any coins.

Don't be afraid to rent from a DVC member. We've rented our points to other people, and they had a WONDERFUL experience! We actually rented to a teacher (our daughter is a teacher) and bless her heart, her schedule changed so many times, and we changed the ressie to suit her family's needs, and in the end, they could not go. We aren't out to make money and sympathize with people, life is life. We returned her FULL deposit, less a tiny bit, re-rented the ressie to a gentleman taking his two aunts. They had a BLAST! I would not hesitate to rent, but we now have DGC and it's taking all we have to feed our one bedroom addiction and take all the DGC! Best wishes for a MAGICAL trip!

For new renters, David's Rental's web site must prove very attractive in many ways but when reading DizneyNutz's flexible approach above, it highlights the added benefits when compare against renting from a third person who has less flexibility, cost are higher and with the possibility of having no contact at all with the owner of the points?

Taken from David's Q&A's - Can I cancel a reservation?
No. Due to the complexity of banking and borrowing points, reservations cannot be cancelled. You may explore the possibilities of adding Travel Insurance to protect yourself against unexpected situations.

I would think a lot of DVC members like DizneyNutz's would try where possible to work with the renter in circumstances where dates need to be changed or cancelled.

And this is just one of the reasons why some renters return to the same member year after year.

Don't get me wrong, David does provide a great service but so do the members who rent their points.

And for your piece of mind do your homework first and check out a DVC members feedback from past renters.

Good luck magrudersmakes3 with renting and have a wonderful time in a DVC resort.

If you can swing it a 1 bedroom will spoil you. It is like having your own Disney apartment. Full size kitchen so you have the option of dining in or at least the full size fridge. How many posts do you read about people getting totally drenched in one of Florida's infamous rain storms including shoes. Been there and got the pics to prove it but we just went back and threw everything in the washer and dryer and were back up and running with dry shoes in no time. We have gotten so spoiled that we book a 1 bedroom even when it is just the 2 of us going.:thumbsup2

:thumbsup2 I really really love the one bedrooms especially if we are staying for more than 3-4 days. I like being able to pack half the amount of clothes needed because I can throw a load in the wash when we get in for the evening, throw them in the dryer before going to sleep and have fresh clothes in the morning. And it is also nice knowing that when I get home, usually on a Sunday, that I don't have to spend that evening doing laundry before starting the work week. We haven't cooked in the one bedrooms yet but have taken cereal and the kids have eaten breakfast while DH & I got ready. And the garden tubs in the one bedrooms, especially the huge tub in the Kidani one bedrooms (in addition to having two FULL bathrooms) is wonderful!

DVC is a property that you can check in the public records - http://www.occompt.com/ . Go to "Record Search" and verify that the deed is on record. Put in the person's first and last name in the "Either Party" section and you will be able to see their DVC Deed.

I have rented out my points directly a few times, and have not made any money.... just broke even , as you point out.
I prefer to rent directly to people (but have used David's)... I charge exactly what I'd get from David.... no advantage to me, but a 3$ advantage to the renter.
You must keep in mind that a person may have a "no refund" policy if they borrow points from the following year to accommodate you. Because, the points get "stuck" in the year they are move to.

It depends on who you rent from. Who I rented from required so much down, then once confirmation and reservation numbers were recieved I made final payment.

This is completely reasonable, as the person renting out their points need to be protected also.
I rented to a woman, last year who paid me in drips and drabs.... I did not mind at all, as she always kept contact and I knew what her financial situation was..... and she knew that if I didn't receive payment before the 30 day window I would cancel her reservation, and refund her $.
I charged her less than what I would've recv'd from Davids, had I rented through him.... but, as Nutz pointed out, many DVC owners are just trying to share some points they can't use.... not to make a profit.

Wow.

I never would have imagined it would be such a reasonable cost. I assumed it was one of those "sure, it saves you money, but only if you were planning on spending an exorbitant amount to begin with" things. This is worth some very serious consideration future trips.

Well we are doing it. I got a confirmation last night that the resort we wanted was available. I'm just waiting for the agreement and final payment information to make sure it's 100% done. :cool1:

Thank you to everyone here for listening and providing great feedback!!!!

We're in the process of renting points from an owner for our trip in November. I did a lot of research and read all the horror stories. I got a couple of friends to read the back and forth emails to see if they could spot any red flags from the owner I was considering renting from.

So far, the process has been great. I requested a contract be done up and she had no problems at all providing one. She has provided us with such great service. We are so excited. I can login to the disney site and see my reservations in my name. She has been more than helpful. The only disadvantage is not having ownership of the reservation. She needs to make all the phone calls and she has, and has been wonderful about it.

It is only costing me $76 more for the entire trip for a 1 bedroom at Jambo/Kidani split stay, then I would have paid for a Cars Suite at AoA with free dining! Plus I get the balcony, full kitchen, washer/dryer plus the Community Hall activities for my kids.

What all does she have to do? I know the actual booking and the ME, but is there anything else I'm missing.

We are renting for the first time for BCV this December. So excited to be going this route this time. Yes, I had to plan out 11 months in advance, but I also knew I wanted to go in December. I worked it out with the owner before the 11 month window, that way she could make the reservation for me as soon as the window became available. (Helped me get my first choice!) I love getting deluxe at mod prices.

we rented points for our upcoming trip in October saved us a TONNE of money for Beach Club Villas

What all does she have to do? I know the actual booking and the ME, but is there anything else I'm missing.

Since we couldn't get all nights at Jambo, the only other option for the remainder of our stay was at OKW. I wasn't keen on this resort. She continued to check periodically for other availabilities as well as putting us on a waitlist so we wouldn't have to move. She noticed an opening at Kidani so we switched from OKW to Kidani. We still have to move but I much prefer the atmosphere of Kidani to OKW.

One other thing, if we want to book the dining plan, I believe she has to do it for us and it has to be paid upfront prior to arrival. This is a Disney policy not hers. I think I will ask her to add it about a week before. I have most of the ADR's already made, although my plans keep changing.

Ah I see. We are fortunate that our week was good to go. I was surprised with it being June and prime season.

We rented points and so far so good. I have all the confirmation and everything. I am just waiting for the renter to add our 1 way ME back to the airport.

Other than worrying about buyer's remorse due to not getting the Free Dining, I am super excited.

Split stay at BCV/AKV for 9 nights at 1562. Yes please.
