Renting DVC points

So, for a family of 5, it wouldn't be cost effective to rent DVC? What would my location options be? Sorry for the hijack... Just curious

You can rent enough points for a two bedroom at any of the DVC resorts. The 1-bedroom villas at OKW, BLT and AKV have an extra sleeper chair in the living room which gives them places for five to sleep. You can book five people in the other resorts' 1-bedrooms, but you'll have to provide an air mattress, bedding and towels for the extra person.

Like the PP said some of the one bedrooms will accommodate five people and I'd really recommend AKV Kidani. In the AKV Kidani one bedrooms you'll get two full bathrooms, a master bedroom/bath (which includes an insanely huge bathtub & separate shower), a living room with a sleep sofa and a sleeper chair. Did I mention that you'll get two full bathrooms? Love having that!

I had a DVC stay booked for Dec..but then found I couldn't go. So, rather than lose my points (as the owner), I decided to have David find someone to rent them from me. I really don't want to be bothered with finding someone to rent them, and then worry about them wanting to cancel down the road. He takes care of all that for me. Then, he gives me the info to book the reservation for the people renting my points. If the renters decide they want either the dining plan or DME, I then make those plans for them as well. David gives me half of my payment when making the booking and the second half when the family checks in at the resort. That way everything is covered. I make some money vs losing my points, and someone gets to stay at BWV for a small amount of money vs booking directly with Disney. This family paid $1300 for 5 nights in a standard view studio. If they had paid cash, through WDW, it would have been $2166. I think that's a pretty fair savings.

For example we are going in June 2013. To rent a 1 br for 6 nights I need 196 points at Akl Kidani, 269 Beach Club.
13 dollars a point is $2,548 and $3,497 respectively. To book regular rooms is $2,248 and $2,388. I can't see a significant savings. Is it because I need a 1 BR.?
I have been able to use room only discounts, but maybe I am missing something? Plus my kids would have to sleep on sofa beds instead of a real bed.
Sorry to hijack, it seems like everyone on this thread is so knowledgable. I would love to know how save with renting DVC.

yes. you are comparing a regular hotel room with a villa with a separate living area, full kitchen and washer/dryer (and 2 bathrooms at kidani).

but if you don't care about the extra space and amenities and just want a place to crash, that's fine, too. the sofabeds are definitely a trade-off.

a studio is a better comparison to a regular hotel room but is not an option for 5.

I have read about renting DVC points from David, but I was wondering how I find out about renting from a private owner..is there a website? Thanks!

I am not sure about a site, but I would assume you could do it through the dis boards. While I am sure most are honest and reputable, I do not think I could do it that way. Good luck to you if that is how you do it!!

The savings is that if you were to book a one bedroom at AKV Kidani for six nights through WDW it would be $3969 versus renting them for $2548 which equates to a little over $1400 in savings.

What they said. :) You really can't compare staying in a one bedroom to staying in a standard WDW resort room. And while the sofabed is a trade-off over a bed I find the ones at AKV to be pretty comfy and more comfy than some of the WDW resorts that I've stayed at.

So I found this thread after doing a search for dvc rental store. I just made a deposit on a studio for the Villas at Grand Californian for feb 2013. So far I have a confirmation #, and a confirmation email from Disney. I also have the screen shot from when the member made our reservation, with the same confirmation number. They are telling me there is not a way for me to check my reservation online, and that the reservation won't get sent to the actual desk at VGC until 3-4 days prior.

So, that makes me a little nervous. My next step is going to be buying trip insurance. Hopefully this will cover us if we get there and there is no reservation.

Is this level of uncertainty normal? I thought there was a place to check my reservation online, but maybe only the member can do this?

Who are you using for your insurance? I want to book trip insurance for this one since it is a all or nothing deal, just not sure who to use. Anyone have any good suggestions?

We just got confirmation back of the room we wanted. The standard view wasn't available so we went with a Lake View so we are now just waiting for the contract to pay for it and then it will seem final.

We rented points to stay in studio room at BCV in November 2010. We rented from an individual here on the disboards. The experience was great. However these are the cons:

1. You have to book reservation 7 to 11 months before travel dates.

2. Once the DVC owner makes your reservation, you usually cannot cancel or change your mind about resort you want to stay at. If you do make changes DVC owner will and be the one to call and make changes. Usually you will not get a refund if you cancel. Sometimes individuals will allow you to cancel upto 45 days before travel dates. WDW allows you to cancel or reschedule reservation and refunds your down payment or package payment.

3. Towel, trash, cleaning services occur on 4th day of stay, you can pay to have the services daily. We paid $5.00 a day for trash and towel services but forgoed the daily cleaning service.

4. DVC resort rooms are usually quiet but away from all that goes on at the main resort. DVC resorts also have very limited selection of QS options. I have discovered that if you need something from the concierge desk (information, or change in a reservation, etc.), it is best to show up in person. They are very helpful in person but we were never helped if we called on the phone for something. We were always put on hold with no return or erroneous information was given. AKV has there own front desk but other DVC concierge desks and check-in are in the main resort building.

5. Payment is usually due in full or in part at the time of booking when you rent DVC points unlike the $200 deposit for WDW packages and full payment by 45 days before travel dates. We paid one half of our reservation at booking, the second half 45 days before booking and bought our tickets when we arrived at resort. Concierge put them on our Key to the World card.

6. No free dining. If you like to eat at TS establishments dining can really add up these days especially for larger families. So free dining is often a better deal.

7. BCV rooms,IMHO, need udating, but if you go into it with the idea that you only paid X amount for the room to stay a week, then you can overlook things and realize it is just a place to sleep and shower. (AKV- Kindani rooms on the other hand are very nice and AKV- Kindani has activities but no QS option.)

8. Studio rooms are small with little storage. These rooms are furnished with one Queen bed and a sleeper sofa with a small kitchenette - Sink, small refridgerator, coffee pot.

The deal breaker for me not to rent again is a combination of increased dining costs and no cancellation policy. Its hard for me to commit to a trip far in advance and my family loves to eat at TS restaurants. if we stay 8 nights we will usually eat at at least 10 ts meals. Eight of these TS meals, plus 8 snacks, and 8 QS meals per person are paid for by WDW leaving only a couple of meals to pay OOP. i would consider renting a couple of nights at the end of a trip though.

Go to mydisneyreservation.com , you can confirm your reservation there.
I rented out my points (thru David's this time) and was able to see the entire reservation on this page.... you have to enter some info... but it's easy to check.

Renting can be a great savings, you really have to compare costs though. Depending on what size unit you need, when you are going, and which resort can affect the price.

Trust has to exist and truly renting is not for everyone. Some just can not get past that they don't have the control.

Everyone has to weigh the advantage (savings) over the loss of control and then decide if it works for you.

You might not be able to see VGC at the website since it is not WDW. And they do everything differently at DL compared to WDW.

You're absolutely right, I just looked there and Aaulani and GWL are absent from the scroll down.
Aaulani is listed below in its own section.
Vero and Hilton Head are included there.

I would read the details of the insurance very carefully as I am not sure if they cover this or not.

So, I would need a 1 or 2 bedroom? A studio does not accommodate 5? I really don't care about a kitchen at all -- we are at the parks early to late and never would use it. Any idea roughly how much I would need to spend for 7 nights, in other words my least expensive DVC option?;) and, I don't mind bringing the mattress, towels etc.

Once again, sorry for the high jack, but I'm learning so much here. :goodvibes

Here is a link to David's points calculator. I prefer using this one, there are others but the number of points are all the same, just different formats. Key in your dates and you will see how many points each resort requires. The only thing that will determine price is who you rent from. A 3rd party like David's, is $13/point. A private owner is anywhere from $10-$12/point. If you are renting privately make sure you do your research.
