Thinking of going to Hilton Head in February. Need to know about bike rentals. Are there lots of bike trails? I assume they are away from car traffic (have a 4yo, gotta ask!)

Also what can I expect to pay for the week? Also do they have surrey bike rentals?

We've got 4 kids, two have smaller bikes (one w/training wheels). I think we could easily take the smaller bikes w/us. Not sure how safe it will be to let the 4 yo loose w/bike - she rides pretty well w/those training wheels, but want to make sure the paths are well away from traffic with plenty of room for other cyclists.

If I remember correctly, the bike rental was $50 for length of stay for 2 bikes and $10 for each additional bike. We have always rented through Disney.

There are marked paths all over the place. But, I don't know if I would have a 4 year old riding on them freely. In order to get to the beach, a portion of the part is through a parking lot, then under a bridge (right along the water), up a steep hill and then on the path along the main road (as in at the side of the road).

Last summer, our DS3 wanted to ride to the beach so we compromised. I drove and waited for him, DH & DS8 to come onto the other side of the main highway (after the steep hill) and then picked him up so he didn't have to ride along the road. I think the motorists around there are very use to seeing biker and not as cautious as they could be. I'd be really concerned with a younger child along that route.

The paths at the Disney property are wide enough for a bike and a person walking. Kids ride through there no problem. Maybe this will be enough bike riding for your kids.

Our DS3 last year rode on the back of DH's bike in a child seat. I felt much more comfortable with him doing that. I hope he fits this summer as well.

Based on our experience with the conditions of the bikes, we do not travel without our cell phone. It's best to be prepared for anything.;)

When we went last March, we paid $50 for length of stay for 2 bikes. I think there was a "Winter" special until the end of February too-don't know how much cheaper. Hopefully we'll find out this year-we'll be there the last week in February and definitely renting bikes. There are lots of bike trails, the island is very well set up for biking.

There are miles of great paved bike trails at HH. Most are found at Sea Pines, but Palmetto Dunes (near the HH resort) are also fine.

As mentioned, the resort does offer rental, but there are also many other options on the isalnd. (Get one of the free island information guides at the front desk.)

Biking is a great recreation at HH.

Enjoy!
