Hi all,
My DH has severely injured his foot. He's having Xrays today, but even if it's not broken, it probably won't be up to par by our vacation Aug. 11. I won't let him cancel our vacation :) , and he's agreed to using a wheelchair if he needs it. He's terribly uncomfortable on his crutches. My question is, is there a cheaper option than renting from the parks? We're not doing WDW. We'll be at Universal, Busch Gardens, and Sea World. The man complained about the cost of visiting the doctor for the foot...so if there's a cheaper alternative, I'd love to hear about it! Universal is $12 a day plus a $50 deposit. I can't find the prices for BG or SW.

Thanks!

Yeah, since formernyer didn't have the foresight to scoop up ALL the wheelchairs possible at the error price :teeth:,,, you may be able to borrow one from your resort, with a credit card deposit, but they do not take advance reservations. Best bet, if you can't find the amazing price she did, is to rent from an outside company. Go to the disABILITIES board, and click on the FAQ. Tons of information there, including links to offsite rental companies.

we went on a cruise a few months back and my dad needed a wheelchair.. we rented one from a local dme provider for $25 for the week.. if all else fails, just look in your local yellow pages under medical equipment..

Check on the "disABILTIES" Forum and look at the "disABILTIES FAQ" which is the third item. One of the subjects is ECVs and wheelchairs; it gives contacts for locations where you can rent. They will deliver to your hotel Bell Services prior to your arrival and pick up after your departure.

Well, I think we got good news...we'll see...DH fractured his 5th metatarsal-the bone nearest the outside edge of the foot. The orthopedist we saw (super nice guy, BTW) said it should be OK for our trip, but to take it easy and rest when it's sore. It won't fully be healed by then, but if DH is careful he should be able to walk fairly normally and without a lot of pain. He also suggested DH use a cane to get around. We tried some at Walmart but DH didn't like how they felt. We might be able to borrow one. I'm hoping we won't need a wheelchair after all, but I'm glad I have the info now, just in case!

I work for a DME company. Most insurance companies will pay for at least 1 month rental of wheelchair for broken bones in the lower extremities. You may only have to pay a 20% coinsurance or even nothing. Check out your medical insurance policy. ALso the going rate for a whole month rental on a manual standard wheelchair should be no more than $60.00 so $25 a week seems really high. Just my 0.02...Good Luck!!
