For those of you that rent a storage unit rather than using Owners Locker, how is it working out for you? If you don’t mind sharing, where are you renting from and how much is it? Where is it located in relation to WDW? Are you sharing the unit with another DVC owner?

We currently have one Owners Locker but I find myself struggling with fitting things in it but don’t really want to pay for two of them. We do know another DVC family that may be interested in sharing a unit so it would be nice to split the cost but is it a pain to go to the unit at the beginning and end of the trip? We do rent a car or have our own car when we drive down.

Good question. I have thought about this myself. I have medical equipment for Dson that we have to ship every year when visiting Disney. So I have also thought about a small storage unit. Owners Locker won't work for me because just the bed rails alone are to big for big.

I'm curious also. Just got my first locker, haven't even officially "met" it yet. lol. But in packing up the stuff I plan to put in it, I don't think it will be big enough. And I just don't want to get another (or a third). Thinking a storage unit might be cheaper.

Having rented storage units, you can get several lockers for the price of an annual rental. Figure a small unit will actually run $75 to $100 a month after the "loss leader promo period".

Things you will also need to check out include insurance and access. Make sure you can access 24/7. Also some units are climate controlled and some are not. In Florida you will need climate controlled.

We have a storage unit in Kissimmee with two other DVC members who work with my DH. (They're all non-park CMs.) We have a small unit and we pay around $10/month each. We always rent a car or SUV, so it doesn't bother us we have to drive to go get it. We keep beach chairs and an inflatable mattress for the three families to share along with some other sharable stuff. Since the three guys work together, we're never on vacation at the same time.

Our bin is larger than what Owner's Locker gives you. This affords us to keep things like a KCup coffee maker (a must for us!), a large Brita water dispenser for the blech tasting Florida water, Crocs, hats, toiletries, extra hangers, large golf umbrellas and ponchos for rainy weather, power strips, and a slew of other things that would be too much for an OL. It seems every time we go down I'm adding a few more things. OL is great too and having the delivery service is nice, but it made more sense for the three families to rent a storage unit together since we all rent vehicles when we each go down, which is at least one to three times a year each. Originally we were going to get three OLs, but this was a cheaper option and affords more space. There is no way I could fit what I currently have in my large bin in one OL. Plus it's nice to have some community property which we all share. I know where our storage unit is located is only accessible until 9 pm, but that time works for us just fine. We don't fly in late or out early morning.

Just as an FYI - Not certain if its something that is still available but I know in the past, OL has come up with customized storage solutions/pricing for items that will not fit in the standard OL box. Might be worth a call to them.

Is this for a climate controlled unit? If so $30/month is cheap.

Another vote for calling Owner's Locker for the medical equipment concern. John is very creative in meeting customer requests and will certainly give your request consideration!

He's very accommodating! They store golf bags for $25/year. I thought I'd put my "larger" item in a golf bag and store it that way, but he said "no need" and offered to store it without the golf bag!! lol

I actually sent them a email more than once and heard nothing back from them. I also checked my spam and nothing there. I need to store collapsible bed rails for a disabled adult along with other medical stuff that I have just for these trips. With a storage unit it would also allow me to store a patient lift which I currently rent while in Disney at about 150.00 per 10 days. Shipping Dson stuff every year has started costing well over 200.00. Each time I ship I also have to worry about items getting destroyed. We have to drive with Dson so having a unit close to Disney would be great. Just need some good recommendations.

That is very odd. They are exceptional at customer service and I just sent an email about something last week and John answered me the same day. I'm thinking maybe you have a bad email address or something.

looking on line I found a place called CubeSmart Self Storage of Orlando
10425 South John Young Parkway
Orlando 32837
phone 1-877-279-3785

It looks fairly close to Disney.
A 5X5X8' is about 35.00 per month. Looks like several start up special also going on. Climate controlled. Entry hours 6am to 10pm
I plan to check it out.

Do you have an address and phone number for them.. Thanks Susan

It's the PS @ 2783 N John Young Pwky in Kissimmee, however their cheapest non-climate controlled unit is $33 at the moment. We've had our climate controlled unit quite a while, which is why our rate is so cheap. There are other storage places in the area, so I'd shop around do some price comparisons.

I had the exact same reaction. Something must be awry because OL Customer Service is beyond exceptional. I would call. (800) 431-6588

I tried twice with emails from either this site or through DVC. Maybe I will call. Just being able to not have to ship the bed rails every time and store a few other small items would be great. I just always worry about the bedrails being destroyed in shipping. Whenever we get the box brought to out room it is mangled. So far the bed rails have survived....

I would call too. We have only had OL a few years and don't contact them often but their customer service can't be beat. One trip I got confused thinking I had given them the wrong date. I called but realized by the third or forth ring we were all set. This was on a Sunday morning and they called me back (caller ID) thinking they had missed my call.
