I think the idea of a storage unit is very interesting. We haven't done an Owner's Locker, yet, because they seem so small. It would be great to share a storage unit with other families.

I think OLs are great, especially with the delivery service and that fact that the bins are stored in a climate controlled environment, but they don't work for quite everyone. My DH and I both have neck issues and must have supportive pillows. It's a real pain to travel with two pillows when we spend 2 - 3 weeks a year total down at WDW. Right now we're in the middle of an 18 month period where we'll spend about 35 days at WDW. When we do other traveling, we bring our travel sized pillows but have bigger ones, which we love, stored in our FL storage unit. Those two pillows alone would take up almost a whole OL, not to mention a full-sized suitcase. Since we've had the storage unit, we only travel with carry-on luggage and just do laundry while we are down there.

We have a 5x5 unit and even with three big bins and community shared items, everything fits in the unit just fine, especially since the bins are stackable. With the three guys all working for a Disney owned company, it wasn't hard to find other DVC owners to share the storage unit together. Sharing a unit was kind of a no-brainer for us. If you know (and trust) other DVC owners, want more storage space than an OL, and you all always rent or have a car, sharing a unit and splitting the cost might be an alternate solution to an OL. Just make sure you get a climate controlled unit and check out the storage place in person before you rent.

I've been trying to figure out what to pack in my OL, and now I'm wondering if there might be people willing to share a storage unit. Hmmm. All the stuff I want to put in my locker won't fit in less than three which would translate to $25 - $45 a month in a storage locker (depending on which access package I sign up for).

At the low end, not worth getting one by myself. On the high end it is just about the low-end average for a 5' x 5' unit.

Arrgghhh. Decisions, decisions.

We have 3 lockers and go to WDW about 4 times a year. I have divided our stuff so that things I only need for cold weather are in one locker, so sometimes we only have 2 delivered. We always have a car but I am on vacation and the convenience of drop off and delivery and knowing that someone else is responsible for keeping my stuff safe in a climate controlled place is worth a lot to me. I have not done the math but to me the extra work involved in a rental unit (including finding reliable people to share) would not be worth saving a few bucks (and I don't even know if it would save). But I applaud those of you who are not as lazy as I am, I guess!

I wouldn't say having an OL is laziness, not at all. For most people who want to store items down near WDW, having an OL (or 2 or 3 even) makes sense. DH and I could do 2 OL and be fine, but our situation was a bit unique with three DVC-owing Disney employees who all work for the same department, each always rent a car, and each go to WDW 2 - 3 times a year, having a storage unit made sense. We like having some community property that we share as well. I think finding trustworthy people to share a storage unit is the hard part. If you have close friends or family that are also DVC or other Orlando area timeshare owners, maybe that works. If not, OL is a great solution. And climate controlled, whether OL or storage unit, is definitely a must for FL.

Based on issues my company has had with some "low cost" storage units I would stick with the locker. It is more secure. (And the issues include extended power outages, leaky roofs and even theft. We finally made everyone use only approved locations. Our costs went up, but... )

we only have one OL (for now), but a big draw for us is that we don't have to waste vacation hours traveling to an off-site facility, picking through and loading items, driving back to our resort & bringing it to our room. then having to do it all in reverse....IMHO, that's too much time wasted each vacation consider also that if one already has back or other physical issues, lifting and carrying storage containers can easily make them worse (not a fun way to start a vacation).

another bonus: we don't have to rent a car for our entire vacation just to return "stuff" - a few extra days of car rental each trip can really add up.

He's very accommodating! They store golf bags for $25/year. I thought I'd put my "larger" item in a golf bag and store it that way, but he said "no need" and offered to store it without the golf bag!! lol

The $25 is the initial membership fee for golf clubs. You also pay the $99 a year locker rental fee for them. OL has great deals but we don't want to put it out of business by charging that little.
