I am helping a friend with a rental. Her first 3 nites are not available but I wondered if members would waitlist for a person renting? I would gladly do it if I had all the points but I know it could be a bit difficult.

Just hoping to tell my friend some good news about renting and waitlisting.

personally, i probably would, but would still need a deposit (refundable if no match was found).
depending on how close a friend she is, have you considered a transfer into your account?

of course, all this is assuming her wanted reservation is likely (e.g., NOT BWV/BCV during the F&WF, most DVCs during december thu new years, a grand villa over spring break, etc).

I rented once to a "cyber friend" (someone I "met" via DisBoards, in fact), and did use the W/L...rather extensively. She wanted 8 nights and 3 scattered throughout the week were not available. She didn't want to change resorts and was more than willing to do the W/L.

It was very early in my UY; I totally trusted (and still do) my friend--and it was before the days of being limited to only 2 WLs and not being able to do day-by-day WLs...

All 3 days came through and my friend's vacation went off w/out a hitch. There were zero problems. She & I were in fairly close contact anyway, so checking the member website for W/L updates was no problem--and actually very fun each time one of the "missing" days came through.

I suspect whether or not to wait list for a renter would depend on how good you feel about the renter, your assessment of the likelihood of it coming through, and the potential for what you'd do if the days didn't come through.

Good luck to your friend.

I would expect the member would ask for payment in case the days came through. Or you could just tell your friend to book for cash for the missing days. Might not be the same room and may have to move - the reservations could not be linked.

Problem is what happens if the entire stay doesn't come through?

If you--as a member--are the one giving your friends the points AND you have an Plan B for dealing with the points if this person ends up unable to use them, then I don't see any problems.

However, if you are asking more from the perspective of "what are the odds that another renter will be able to accommodate", I would think the odds are slim. A member renting points wants the process to be as quick and painless as possible. The member doesn't want to wait for weeks or months with the entire rental in jeopardy depending upon that waitlist success.

If it were me, I would only do it if the renter booked SOMETHING (probably split stay) for the entire duration and then waitlisted for a preferred resort. As long as the commitment is there--along with payment--I could live with it.

I would definitely not leave the relationship in a state where the entire rental transaction was dependent upon waitlist success. That would get a "thanks but no thanks" and I'd move on to the next interested party.
