Dh and I only have store credit cards and our debit card. We don't really believe putting things on credit. We use our debit card so there is no interest and we don't rack up bills. We are paying for our whold WDW trip this way! Well I was wondering how we would rent a car without getting a general purpose credit card. We do have dept. store ones that we don't use or pay off at the end of the month. Anyway of renting a card without applying for a credit card. Thanks for the info.

well Dollar rental lets you use your mastercard or visa debit card.....it is the amount of car ...and I think like 10%!! not much at all! and they have a fastlane to so you do not have to wait in line!

I understand your reluctance to run up credit card bills. But I think EVERYONE ought to have one major credit card for emergencies, car rentals, major purchases, etc. You have protections when paying for something with a credit card that you don't have when paying with cash or a check.

A store credit card is no different than a Visa or MasterCard - except that its use is extremely limited.

Please remeber that most debt card have a daily limit. Depending on your limit it may be hard to pay for the hotel and the car on the same day.

Actually, debit cards have two different daily limits. One for cash withdrawls and one for purchases. I would call your bank and find out what they are.
Alamo, btw, charges your card the day you rent, not when you return.

I do not believe in credit card debt either. However, I do have an American Express card. It's a Delta Skymiles Amex, and I get 1 sky mile for every $1 spent. I use it for everything - even groceries, prescriptions and every other purchase I possibly can put on it. I use a large envelope and I put the receipt and the $ in it the minute I get in the house. The bill is paid in full every month, and we have never paid any interest. We also use it for our AOL account as well as the cell phone, etc. It comes in handy for ordering over the phone too. We have accrued enough miles for 2 FREE airline tickets to our next trip to WDW! American Express also has discounts at WDW too - another perk of this "credit" card.
Oh, and I first got this card specifically so that I could rent a car at the airport in Orlando!

Every bank is different but I know that with my debit card, I can authorize a higher daily limit for a particular day or 2 days. For example, when I purchased our airfare (6 people), I knew it would exceed the daily limit of $1,000 so I called the bank and explained. They increased the limit to $2,000 for the day I purchased the airfare. (Of course, the funds have to be available). Check with your bank for their policy.

I to never had any problems with limit on my cards.......personaly I dislike Credit cards...and I feel if you cannot pay csh you should not have it!! just think.....when WE get back...we have no debt!:D

They may let you temporarily put it on the credit card then when you return it pay for it with either cash or debit- we have done that before- but never in Orlando- they might be willing to do that. They want it orginally on a credit card in case you demolish the car but once they check it out there should be no problem paying with a debt later.

I was excited to see that I could rent a car with a debit (I am going to call to make sure).
I can totally see where having a card (and we have in the past and racked it up) is good to
have for emergencies and such. I just think it would be hard to keep it paid off. I have
gotten so use to debit cards. They are accepted everywhere I shop. I had not thought about
the amount limited on a daily basis. I will talk to bank and see if they can do that for a day
or two. Things like hotel and such will be paid before we go.

My mom did not have any credit cards and no loans not even for her 3 year old mini van. When places would go to check her credit, it would be bad credit because it was no credit. It was almost impossible to get her first credit card because none of the credit companies wanted to be the first liability. That was nuts! They get you coming and going. I also hate what they do college kids and make them claim bankrupcy before they even graduate!
Thanks for the advice I will let you know what happens.:p

Hi,
Trust me, Alamo rents with a debit (visa or mc logo) cards. They zip the card the day you rent the car, so, no worries about the hotel bill and the car rental.
I have done this many many times. I believe they outline the methods of payment acceptable on the web site.
If you join QS you can enter all the information at the time of membership, get the card (if you don't get it, you can use the debit card listed ), make the ressie and then go to the kiosk and get your car assignment. It is quick and easy.
