My family and I will be renting a car at MCO, don't know yet which rental car co we will use. Anyway, my son in law will be the only driver. My questions are
1. can I put the rental on my cc, if I will NOT be there when the car is dropped off? ( The car will be dropped off in Naples, Fl, although rented at MCO and I will not be there for the drop off, I will be there at MCO for the initial rental.

2. Can we use a car rental club card, such as National EA, that is in my name, if he( son on law) is the only driver?

If we can not use my cc at the drop off, son in law will use his, so then again, if his cc is used, would that mean my rental car club card could not be used??

We've rented numerous times before, but this time there seems to be more ??'s.

Thanks in advance, Karen

How do you expect an answer if you don't even know what agency you'll be using?:confused3

I suspect you already know the answers

from National's website:

At the time of rental, the renter must present the actual credit card used for each online transaction, with available credit, in their own name, and the signature on the back must match the name imprinted on the card. In addition, the number printed on the card presented by renter must match the number stored for the online transaction

Since you won't be there when the car is returned you won't be able to ask them to change the billing to your cc.

AFAIK the EC is non-transferrable so you won't be able to use that.

You might call. What you want to know is if the renter (you) can be different then the driver (SIL). I think there are limited circumstances where this is permitted.

Thanks Lewisc, I didn't realize that there would be different answers depending on the rental car co when I asked the question. I thought there would be pretty much of a standard procedure. I guess I will have to call each co we are thinking of using before I book.

Just in case you decide to go with EA, have your SIL join. Since he will be the only driver, he can put in all the info that is needed.
I believe EA is still free too.

I either mis-read your question or didn't understand responses from others.

I read your initial information to indicate that you'll be there when the car is picked up. If you're there for the pick up, there shouldn't be an issue regarding using your credit card and establishing your emerald club status. I don't know of any rental car company that requires a renter to show their credit card again at the time of return. If your SIL is returning the car I don't see why that wouldn't work for you. He'd just have your credit card receipt.
The only issue that I'd see from any of your plans is to designate your SIL as the driver (or an additional driver) and he would probably need to show his license and co-sign the rental agreement at the time that the car is picked up. If he's set up as an additional driver there may be an additional charge.

I see one issue
1. SIL is the driver. SIL does not qualify as spouse or significant other which I think means you have to pay the "additional" driver fee. For all rental car companies the person renting the car (i.e., providing the credit card) must be the primary driver.

2. On the return. I routinely return cars for my coworkers. The check in guys say "leave it on your mastercard" and I say yes. I don't volunteer that I am not XYZ and it's never been an issue.

3. To use the rental club number the reservation (and credit card) will need to be in the members name.
