Rent out points and pay cash for Moderate resort stay?

hey so this is a weird one and might not make sense if I’m missing something completely, but just seeing if it’s worth it or not.

Bear with me here.
We have 200 PVB points with april UY. We are going in September for 9 nights. 4 of us total. The way I’m calculating my stays are points per year cost (total purchase price divided by total years on contract and then annual fees divided by point) which comes to $9.80 per point per year for us.

So the 9 nights for us would run 150 points x $9.8 or $1470. For the stay. (367.50)
Plus $482 for discount hopper tickets from undercover tourist.
So that’s at about $850 and
And be responsible for food

Ok still with me? That same time there are cash stays with dining plan included. The same time frame at Coronado Springs or Port a Orleans Riverside with park hopper tickets would be around $4900 or $1225 per person with tickets and most meals included for us (I know it’s two meals but we don’t do 3 huge meals usually anyway when at Disney)

So about $375 difference with food being mostly covered for us.

So I know I sound like an idiot but here’s what has me wondering if it’s worth it. We will have my parents which are mid 50s and the mrs and I are contemplating starting our family, so I want to make sure she’s comfortable too, and I’m not sure either one of them would be comfortable on a pull out.

If I rented out my points at David’s where I would do the least amount of work the going rate they give you is $13 per point it looks like which would be around $2600, so would cover our portion of it and guarantee 2 queen dedicated beds. But the trade off would be trading down from a deluxe to a moderate. (OKW isn’t a huge selling point for the Mrs)

I’ve never been a huge math whiz so I could be missing something thag makes you think “duh idiot no it’s not worth it for you because you forgot _____” lol. But anyone have any insight please and thanks!

I was all set to say go with OKW! Lol Riverside was my favorite moderate but I'd still just go with OKW vs the bother of renting out plus paying more for the stay. So, I guess no help since that's a no go other than wondering why it isn't.

Heya thanks for response. I think it’s msotly the theming of it, and she wasn’t a fan of the layout of studios etc from what we saw on YouTube videos. Just seemed more run down in comparison for her. Vs the theming of PVB etc is more up her alley, and loving the pool. (A decent pool is what made Coronado a thought) I agree it might be not much savings though to rent it out (though if I did the work could probably pay for a little more of our trip) I think doing rough math of about $15 per meal twice a day then another about $10 for the two snacks, would put us at about a $50 per person savings for the trip (which isn’t huge, but could be a bigger savings if I rented the points for higher etc, and had a non OKW to queen room lol)

Perfect bank you. I was just perusing blogs trying to see if I could see a difference. It might be in video but just in case if it’s not done by then would I be able to just like request a refurbished room if booking there? Thanks so much for your help. You’re always immensely helpful!

OKW refurb should be completed in a few months Stink, as you can see rooms are lovely. If you haven’t stayed there, generally it is a lovely resort, I love it there. This is a good video of the 1 bed

I booked once OKW, just because of the two queen beds in the studios, but I wasn't a fan looking at the pictures. I like it much more than I expected. It has a very relaxing atmosphear that you cannot get looking at videos or pictures. After a frantic day in the parks, going back to OKW is a pleasure. As a converted, I'd say: give it a go.

Unless you keep your contract to the end when you contract is worth 0 then your calculations is off. If you sold in say 5 years, you would most likely get more than the $142 you paid per point. If you sold and could pocket $142 after all expenses are paid then you would only have paid the annual dues for using the points.

Many will say they will keep the contract to the end, but truth be told they wont. From what I read the average ownership is 5-10 years.

So the same math with only dues would be $6.76 x 150 points = $1,014 or $253,5

Imagine how the math would look if you ended up making money selling your contract.

OKW is like Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville. My wife (and her friend) constantly said how cheap it looks, ect. (without ever being there) so I booked to settle it once and for all.... my wife dont say that anymore and would stay there again in a heartbeat. If your bringing parents, they will love it x100

Old Key West is one of my favorites! It is so relaxing there. The boat ride to Disney Springs is great too!

We have used our points at OKW many times, mostly because of the low # of points required for a stay and the larger size of the rooms. We usually get a 2br there.

The resort is nice. We stayed in a renovated room, and it was clean and had that “new” feeling.

We also liked that Minnie Vans pick up outside your building. No need to walk to a bus stop or main entrance.

I’d recommend OKW.

As mentioned the refurb is supposed to be finished in the next few months so by September it should be completed.

The other trade off would be renting out all 200 of your points to get $2600 versus using 150 and having 50 left for another trip

I also don't think any of the first part of the calculation is necessary in terms of how much your points are worth based on purchase price, etc.
For this vacation, I would calculate that my points are "worth" whatever I would get renting them out instead of using them. I would calculate 150X13=$1950 because you stated it would only take 150 points to rent at OKW for 9 nights.

OKW studio would be 2 queen beds, 390 sq ft plus a balcony/patio
POR room wold be 2 queen beds, 314 sq feet no balcony/patio

And am I understanding correctly that your parents are in the same room with you but if you stay at OKW they don't pay for lodging at all and if you stay at POR the bill gets split evenly? That seems to be where a lot of the "savings" staying at POR comes for you (along with renting out 200 points versus only using 150 points)
Also, if you stay at POR you will pay extra occupancy fee, parking, and as you already know full price for tickets to get free dining

I hear your wife doesn't care for OKW. If I were staying with my in-laws in one hotel room (yes, I've done it before), I would prefer the extra 76 sq. feet as well as a place to sit outside.

And how much does the money mean to you. There are some years where staying in a moderate and having the extra money in your pocket is really nice - and some years where "who the heck cares about a few hundred or a thousand dollars"

But I'd do the math differently. I'd add up projected costs for your DVC trip - including food, but don't bother putting in the cost of your ownership.

I'd project the cost of a moderate trip minus the money you'd make by renting the points.

Your amortized long term costs are meaningless here - you are looking at one trip vs. the other. You pay for dues either way.

It sounds like your thought process makes sense. Having 2 beds for 2 couples is much better than one couple having to sleep on the sleeper sofa.

The newly refurbished OKW rooms look very nice, so i think you would be comfortable there and they would be much larger than the PO studios. 9 nights is a long time to be in a small space, no matter how well you get along. Plus you have the boat to DS.

Have you calculated getting TiW? We did this for our trip in April - 7 of us with at least 1 TS meal per day. It definitely saved us money and we were able to use it for another trip. I'd imagine you would get some savings even with 4 adults dining. So if you think you would be back again and could use TiW then that might work out better than the "free dining".

I think the space you get at the deluxe OKW studios would be a huge bonus when traveling that long with in-laws (just saying for your wife's sake).

To save this much i don't know if it would be worth it to be stuck in a small room. In POR there aren't even doors to the sink area of the bathroom. The only privacy is in the tiny toilet/shower area. Plus in a DVC room you will get the fridge/coffee maker/micro - which might be nice if you just want to store a few items for a quick breakfast. We stayed POR for one night with just my DH and DD and it was nice but DVC rooms are definitely a big step up.

I just looked - to get a 2BR at OKW for 9 nights in September it would be 275 points -- you could borrow some points to really splurge and have space with your parents. Or just shorten your trip to 7 nights for 217 points.
