I would compare one trip with the same amenities to another trip so the only variables are downgrading the room and having to hassle renting out points
So OKW would cost 150 points plus $1928 (4 tickets at $482 each) plus $1890 to add Quick Service Dining Plan (as that is what you would get for free at POR)=$3818 Total for all 4 lodging, tickets, and dining plan
POR would cost $4900-(renting points) $1950=$2950 Total for all 4 lodging, tickets and dining plan
This is how I'd do the math - so its $900 more to stay at OKW minus the hassle of having to rent your points. $300 OKW is a no brainer, $900 starts getting into real money for most people.
There's an issue with the calculation - the 150 points number being used is for 9 nights at PVB which is what they are not wanting to do. The comparison was for the cost of PVB vs renting and paying cash at one of the moderates. I brought up OKW which would require fewer points.
The OKW studio is going to be around 102 points for 9 nights in Sept - that covers 2 weekends. If it does not include 2 weekends then it's even less. So using the calculation they had on the cost of their points using straight depreciation plus MF's it an "out of pocket" cost of $999.60. If renting out 102 points to compare OKW - which is the only DVC studio with 2 beds so the closest comparison to a moderate. And it should be bookable for them at 7 months in September. Then that 102 points value if renting PVB points thru Davids is around a $1479 value, not $1928. (And that is giving credit for premium resort point rentals in the home priority period vs the $13 used with the 150 points. )
So, if adding the dining plan for 4 ppl for 9 nights plus using the calculation of renting out 102 points plus buying park hoppers for 4 ppl it's approx. a $400 "premium" for OKW. If just out of pocket it's less to stay at OKW. $999.60 + $1890 (QS dining plan) + $1940 tickets = $4829.60. And there is of course the debate if the QS dining plan is even what they should have and that going with OKW plus tickets and then OOP for food could either cost less than the $1890 or else be better spent on dining where wanted vs QS.
