Removing tickets from package later

I am helping a friend plan a trip and I generally don't need to worry about booking this way as I am a DVC member. They want to book their room next week and are hoping to be able to get free dining for Oct. If they get that then they will need to book an entire package through Disney. However if their dates don't have free dining they will be doing a room only package and purchasing their tickets through UCT. This information won't be available for a couple of months. However they will need tickets linked in order to make their fast pass plus reservations this month... The only way I can think of around this is to book a package with tickets through Disney this month and if for some reason they can only get a room only discount they can change it to a room only later? Would this work or has anyone had to work around this before?

October on-site guest FP+ booking happens in August.

Fastpasses can only be booked 60 days in advance for onsite guests. They have plenty of time to find out about free dining and change their package to a room only if need be before they need to book FP+.

Well it has been a long day I think lol because I know it is 60 days for fastpass+. This month they can book their dining which is what I was thinking of (tickets don't matter for that). Complete blonde moment for me I can't believe I just did that
