Remodeling- Question about undermount kitchen sinks

I've noticed undermount sinks can have two different edges. One where the granite and the sides of the sink are perfectly flush. (first pictures) The second where the granite meets the sink and then the sink juts out just a smidge. (the second two pictures) DH said he really likes when it is smooth, as do I. One less place for gunk to settle. I've asked our contractor about it and am frustrated because he doesn't know and is pretty ambivalent about figuring it out. Do you know what determines this? Is it the way the granite is cut, or the style of the sink?

The contractor probably doesn't know. A stone fabricator is sub-contracted to measure and cut stone countertops. However, your question (which I don't know the answer to) involves a decision about your sink before the fabricator arrives. I would go to a plumbing showroom and ask your question there. That's also a good place to narrow down what sink you really want. There are so many different ones, different quality, different depths and widths. And your sink choice may affect what type faucet you can choose and where it can be located. Also think of your sink width and depth in terms of the size of the cabinet it's going into. It can get very detailed.

It's called a reveal, and it's either positive, negative or zero. Some sinks are designed for one or the other, so the PP's advice to confer with the plumbing supply house is right on. If you google those terms beforehand, you'll go in armed with an understanding of the terms. I always mix up at least two of them.

I wanted the first but got the second. I didn't ask for either--I had no idea at the time & then it was too late. It is one of the very few changes I'd make in the house we built. It does catch stuff. But not a huge deal, really.
