Remembrance Day - how does it result in 3 days off?

I get that Government offices that aren't open on the weekends will take Monday Nov 13th as their holiday and that banks follow the same schedule.

What I don't understand is that my neighbourhood TD bank, which is normally open 7 days a week, will be closed Nov 11, 12 & 13. Why do they get the Sunday off?

I also don't understand why Remembrance Day isn't a nationally recognized holiday, but that's a different issue.

They most likely chose to be closed as every other banking institution will be closed that day sandwiched between the 2 days that Remembrance Day is observed. No banking is actually transacted on the Sunday so they chose to be closed.

Aren't banks always closed on Sundays to start with?

What I don't agree with is getting both Saturday AND Monday off. Since Remembrance Day falls on Saturday I can understand banks being closed Saturday. But getting Monday off as well I disagree with. I understand any business normally closed Saturday getting their next business day off because of Remembrance Day (or a statutory holiday) falling on a weekend, but not two days.

Ha! That's even worse. Well, good that they are normally open on Sundays I mean, but wow - they really need to be closed 3 days for Remembrance Day? Sheesh. Too bad more business don't give their employees that many days off.

The banks are closed for Monday because the markets will be closed too. Many banks or even just different branches aren't open Saturday's so it's really to make up for the regular mon-fri people. They can't close the bank sat and then open for Monday as they'd have to pay extra to the mon to Friday staff.

It's just weird in this case because some branches are open Saturday's. But lots of banks aren't.

I too was kinda shocked that many are closing on Monday instead of Friday.... closer to the 11th.

I had expected our stat (I'm Federal gov't) to be the Friday, but apparently it's taken AFTER the holiday, so I'll never get a Friday off unless the holiday actually falls on that day. I thought it made more sense to be done closest to the holiday, but nope. Gotta remember - if it made sense, it wouldn't be the government.

Normally the bank staff who work on Saturday, get mondays off normally.

I was in junior high when Remembrance Day stopped being a national holiday. The explanation given at the time is that people (especially kids) were no longer appreciating its purpose and just treating the day as a normal day off. Instead, no holiday, but schools typically have assemblies in the morning. In more recent years, stores around here don't open until 12:30 on the 11th, allowing staff time to participate in Remembrance activities should they wish.

Remembrance day has always been a stat holiday in BC (in my lifetime) I actually assumed, until a few years ago, that it was for all of Canada. Honestly it still doesn't sit well with me that it isn't :/ Remembrance Day ceremonies are well attended and respected where I live because people have the time off to do it.
