Rachel, if you switch to the manual focus setting on the lens, you should be able to take a picture with the lens cover on. If not, you need to have your lens or your camera looked at.

Do you have some settings I can play with?

I tried it yesterday with the lens turned to M, and shot in manual and it would not take the photo. It kept blinking a green light inside next to a "6".

I am not the only one who has had this issue. We had a disscussion a while back and smeone with either a 20d or rebel is having the same problem.

When you say that a "6" was flashing, could it have been a "b" for bulb? And where on the screen was it flashing? Where the shutter speed goes, where the apperture goes, etc?

My XT will do it on any setting including "Auto". Have you tried it using different lenses? If it will do it with another lens it is a lens problem, if it won't work with a different lens it is a camera problem. I remember Jann had this issue with her XT and 28-135IS lens and she felt it was her lens so she was sending to Canon for repair. I have tried this with my 50 f/1.8 and my 28-135 IS and both have taken the shot with the lens cover on while in manual focus mode.

canon just emailed me that they are working on my lens but not sure if they will just fix it and send it back or what...although they did tell me that basically everything nullified the warranty ie "sand", "moisture", etc etc etc so they would tell me if it was something they felt covered by any of the exlusions so I could pay for it....so guess you are supposed to never take it outside ? . i have taken it to the beach a few times but it never left my neck....it's not like i laid it down on the beach, rolled it around in the sand and left it there till the tide came in. maybe they just say that to cover themselves

being a diehard Minolta guy I'm not all that familiar with Canon.

with Minolta if I have my camera in focus priority mode, it will not take a picture if it can't read that it is focused, even in manual focus, it this situation I switch to shutter priority so it will take a picture regardless of being in focus or not...

does Canon have a focus priority mode in your focus settings....

the beach is one of the biggest killers of camera gear one grain of sand in the wrong spot can cause problems.....it's not all that unusual for a fine salt spray to be blowing in off the ocean and this too can cause big prblems with camera gear..

this is fresh water , it was working ok after i got back from the ocean in sept.but it seems if it were that easy to get sand/ moisture inside( ie just by walking on a beach with the lens on taking photos) they'd do something to remedy that..(they didn't say it was sand/moisture just sent a list of what would invalidate warranty...)i can see if you drop it or something, or even if the wind was blowing a bunch of sand around....that is your fault and not use as intended or not using your head, but you ought to be able to use something as it's intended and not have it invalidate the warranty...and i didn't see anything where it said "do not use to take pictures on a beach", "do not go near a beach with camera" "do not even think of taking camera on vacation if you will be near a beach "

on my rebel xt the number of burst mode photos i can take is in the space right next to the exposure scale in the eyepiece...ie i can take 5 in raw in burst so there is a five unless i take one then it goes down accordingly. guessing that might be what your six is? to the right of the number is a circle that blinks if it isn't focusing and is just green if it's focused

they also don't tell you, do not take sky diving, rock climbing etc, but drop it while doing these activities and they wil not honor the warranty..

they go by the theory that a person of average intelligence should know that electronic equipment and beach/oceans don't go together very well..


it's all part of planned obsolescence..it's burried in the warranty somewhere, leaving them an easy out when a camera comes in for repairs..

they do remedy the problem to a point in professional grade cameras, one of the reasons they cost more, sturdier more water resistant build..

I am going to have to play some more. I posted over at the Canon site and MAYBE I did not set the lens to manual focus. According to the Canon boards, if everything is in manual, it should take a photo in the absolute dark. It will be black but it will take.

i know with some of my lenses it will take a picture with the lens cap on...heheh don't ask me how i know that....

with my lens i did notice that a few times after i had changed it to manual focus and back to auto it would "stick" and not take a photo when i depressed the shutter and wonder(ed) if for some reason it was not switching between the two like it should and therefore not focusing...i'll have to see what they say.

and if they even try to get out of fixing it for any reason they are going to have a giant fight on their hands...i have always babied my stuff ( which is why my 10 yr old lenses don't have so much as a scratch, dent, nick or scuff anyplace on them) and never did anything to it that could be construed as not normal usage. they will see my "hulk" side for sure if they try to pull that with me
