Religion.

The bible also said a guy came back from the dead. And that all the animals in the world were fit onto a boat in pairs.

If the bible was written by god through men, then why all the countless versions and revisions? If god can't even get it straight, why should we listen to it?

The dofferent versions are so that people can understand it better. Its all the same, just in a different wording.

I just can't believe that by not following the Bible exactly, I'm going to Hell.
In fact, I don't even know if I believe in Hell.

Love thy neighbor as thyself.

Why is that so hard to follow?

If we really followed that, then we wouldn't be here, arguing about religion.

The Lord wants us to love everyone. At least, the Lord that I worship. I don't know about the guy that some of you worship, but he doesn't seem like such a nice guy...

God doesn't always expect you to follow the Bible exactly. But he wants you to at least try.

And if you dont believe there is a Hell, that's on you.

And the God I worship loves everyone. And God is the nicest person in the universe, but he doesn't let the wicked prosper, and the humble to fall.

Since He knows everything about revenge, he is giving them, exactly what they asked for. It hurts Him to do so, but He said he would do it, and he's not changing His mind about. God, doesn't want to do it, but those people ask for it, so he GIVES it to them.

No offence Katie, but if you skim over most of Nomi's posts, maybe you shouldn't be so snippy towards her:confused3
again, no offence but the "miss science" comment came off as really rude.
these threads about religion & gay marrige and such are getting really vicious.

but I do have a valid question for super religious people,
do you believe in Dinosaurs & cavemen?????
Because I don't believe Dinosaurs are mentioned in the Bible,
where do they fit in in the historical timeline??

i truly would like to know, i obviously don't know the answer and I'd like to hear everyones take.

If be "cavemen" you mean, regular, educated people, who lived in caves, then yes. I do believe in them. I don't believe that they were stupid people, who happen to live in caves.

As for dinosaurs, in the Bible it does mention stuff about weird, amazing creatures. Maybe those culd be dinosaurs. I'm not completley sure, though.
Even if they find evidence, that won't make me believe it..

what do you mean even if they find evidence??
haven't you ever seen a dinosaur fossil?
and there were cavemen and cro-magnons, they have found skeletons of humans dated back millions of years, and they somewhat resembled the skeleton of an ape. Lucy for example.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_%28Australopithecus%29

I asked that question though because I personally am completely confused about the historical timeline...when did Jesus occur in history?

what a strange sentiment...

They found "evidence" that we came from monkeys, but I still don't believe it.

I believe in my faith, and nothing is changing it,

I understand that you firmly believe in your faith, but you really truly don't believe that dinosaurs & cro-magnons existed with absolute scientific and historical evidence??

You can still have faith and accept proven facts :confused3

I have a certain amount of faith, but I know that dinosaurs existed, I would never question something that I've seen with my own eyes (obviously I'm talking about fossils, not real Dinos lol)

I just thought I'd throw in my random opinion of religion :)

I was baptised a catholic and I made my 'holy communion' and stuff, even now I go to a catholic convent school. But I recently decided that I wasn't going to get 'confirmed' (which is basically like a second baptism but its your choice) which upset a lot of my family. Unfortunately, I don't 100% believe in Jesus or God (at the moment, sometimes I change my mind, but generally I don't). It's not that I'm doing it to 'rebel', I just honestly can't believe it. I would love to be able to, but theres too much other stuff that I take into account.

I'd also like to think that theres a heaven, but thats also hard for me to accept. However, sometimes I feel like my relatives who have passed on are still like with me somehow. In the future, I hope I can like finally settle on an opinion of the whole religion thing. Atm it's very unsettling.

However, I totally agree with the simplistic teachings of the bible that basically back up what should be conscience and morals, ie: don't steal, don't murder etc. I also don't push my opinion on my fellow friends and will only ever argue about religion if someone says that atheism is stupid ;/

-:hippie:Ashleeeeigh.

I'd like to mention that cavemen weren't 'stupid' or uneducated. They were very smart and educated about the earth in that time period. In a million years the humans then will probably think we were dumb and uneducated.

Blah, anyways. I just hate when people say that they were stupid. They weren't.

Like I said, they might have evidence, but I still don't believe it...

You don't believe something that's been proven multiple times? Wow.
You must not believe a word anyone says then.

Well he believes Matthew, Mark, Luke and John...

What do you Christians think of Harry Potter, Da Vinci Code and His Dark Materials?

I know some Christians in my church were complaining and telling everyone not to watch the Northen Lights because it's all about abandoning your religion... I read the books and I didn't even notice about this... I watched the movie and it was the best movie I saw last year. Even then, I didn't see the connection...

I have a few questionbs for Christians.

1. Do you believe that humans are animals (which we are, I just know some Christians don't for some reason)?
I think that we are catagorized as "animals". I just don't think we evolved from them.

2. If you don't believe in evolution, do you believe that the Earth is as old as it is (4.5 billion years)?
Not too sure..I don't believe in evolution, but how can you really be sure the Earth is really that old?

3. Do you dismiss the idea that life on Earth will end when the Sun turns into a red giant and will either burn up every living being or embody the Earth (I know that didn't sound very scientific but I'm not good at wording things)?
No. I think that the end of the world will be when judgement day occurs.

We are HUMAN and no type of ANIMAL. God created us from his own image. Not from animals..

::yes::

I don't understand how people can ignore scientific facts about the earth and how we came about..

Personally I don't believe we "evolved" from monkies. That doesn't agree with me.

I have a question and hope it doens't come off as rude. Please keep in mind I am not very educated in the area of religion.

Who or What is God?
Is he a person, a spirit in the sky, an animal, something else?
Once a person who is now a spirit?
I'm just wondering what everyone perceives God as.

God is my savior. Plan and simple.
I know that doesn't neccessarily answer your question, but that's who God is to me.

I believe in my faith, and nothing is changing it,

Amen.

You don't believe something that's been proven multiple times? Wow.
You must not believe a word anyone says then.

I believe what Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John say. And what has been said about my faith...

thats an intresting note.. i just saw the Golden Compass... apparently, people were saying how it was telling people to go against god or something... i didnt pick that up at all? it was more about overthrowing a semi-fascist government to me... that, and awesome visuals lol.. i was just wondering how it went against religion

In the Golden Compass there really isn't much about going against god but in the next two books (The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass) their is a lot more with it and everything. It doesn't say it right out and you kinda have to look for it sometimes but it's their.

For Christians who do believe that all other animals besides humans are soul-less and do not go to Heaven, I don't understand how they could possibly find Heaven to be any type of paradise at all without other animals besides humans. But then again, if you have the nerve to say other animals are soul-less (because if there are souls humans definitly aren't the only ones to have them), I guess you don't really love them that much anyway.

And Katie, if you don't believe that Earth is 4.5 billion years old, how old do you think it is? Do you think that humans have existed for as long as Earth has existed?

I don't think the Earth is really all that old. I don't think it's billions of years old at all.

I don't know how long I think humans have existed. It depends on what ''days'' are in Creation in the Bible. And that's something we'll never know on Earth.

I have a question and hope it doens't come off as rude. Please keep in mind I am not very educated in the area of religion.

Who or What is God?
Is he a person, a spirit in the sky, an animal, something else?

I'm just wondering what everyone perceives God as.

God is everything. God is always. God has always been. God will always be.
God is my saviour. God is my hero. God listens to me when nobody else will.
God is my everything.

I don't think God was ever a person.

In the first place, can you please give me a source where these scholars have posted their findings? (It's funny that you call me miss science, I'm an art student  )

Well, I read it in the footnotes of one of my Bibles. So, if you don't find that a credible source then that's fine.

Well seeing that there are roughly 1 -2 million named species, that boat would need room for 4 million species. Seeing as how the world was supposedly flooded, they would have to carry not only all terrestial animals (reptiles, amphibians, mammals, insects, ect....) the ark would also have to carry all freshwater fish and most birds. On top of that, the ark would also have to carry food and supplies for all these animals, which would also take up a considerable amount of space (at least half the boat).

Well, I do belive in adaptation. And there are roughly 1-2 million named species NOW. But over 2,000 years ago at the beginnining of time there may not have been that many. I don't think there were that many either. I think God knew what he was doing. That's why he gave Noah specific instructions on how to build the boat.

And there is also no evidence for a global flood (which, if it occured, would have a great deal of evidence). The flood in the bible was most likely an exaggeration of a flood in the red sea or in the surrounding area.

There's no evidence for a lot of stuff. There'd be no evidence you were living in 100 years if people didn't write stuff down or take pictures. People would just have to rely on the stories that were passed down about you.

Really? I'm not just talking languages, I mean changes within the content and rules put forth in the bible to suit the needs of whoever was using it to control the population, let alone languages. And why all the assumption that it's your bible that is 'his word'? You do realize that there are many other religions with a holy text, and there is nothing that makes the bible so special. Like most holy texts the bible is just an accumulation of older religions and mythology, as well as changes made by people to suit them and/or the veiwpoints of that time.

Yeah. The street Bible is pretty funny if you ask me. I 'assume' that my Bible is His word because of my faith. Again. It's a faith thing.

You do not understand something, so you ignore it and decide it must not be true? Thats a great way to go about things....

No. I never denounced what you've written as being not true. I've read through all of it. And understood what I could. But, I didn't do hardcore research on the words I didn't know. I just used context clues or skipped over them. And I actually agreed with some of it. Like the thing about love and etc.

An interesting side note. I love science, but I'm usually bored stiff in bio... I think it's just the format in which things are taught. The teracher makes a big difference too. Last year I had a great bio teacher, and the class was very fun and interesting. This year, my bio teacher was boring, and the difference is very noticable. Most kids fall asleep.

I love my bio class. I just dislike science.

I didn't mean to be snippy and I was going to apologize for this comment. I was just preoccupied with other things. But that is still no excuse to be rude. I really am sorry if that offended you Nomi.

I mean. I can't deny that there were dinosaurs. There obviously were. Maybe they're part of the 'animals' that God created. I don't know. It's quite possible. There were 9 foot tall people in the Bible. And there were people that lived to be thousands of years old. There could have been dinosaurs.

guys, i know this is a really controversial topic, and i know you all have strong opinions. but i just figured that we were all mature enough to keep it clean. if i was wrong about that, tell me now.

Personally, I think katy's faith is a beautiful thing.

But I also find nomi's well thought out, well educated posts enlightening.

but katy, i think that if you admit to not actually reading her posts, yet continuing to argue with her, well that just comes off as ignorant to me. flat out. not trying to be rude or anything like that, just my honest opinion.

fighting isn't cool. if you can't express your opinions without personal attacks (i.e. miss science) well then if you can't say nothin' nice....

keep it polite, you guys. i don't want this thread to turn out in another big fight with feelings hurt.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to fight. And i'm sorry if I sound like i'm fighting.
It just feels like i'm fighting a battle by myself here with everyone against me.
Which is fine. Just hard.
