Religion.

For some reason I seem to recall someone anouncing the evil number, or what ever it is called, is really 999 or something too.

How can a number be evil... :confused3

Well the number 13 is unlucky to some...

Does anyone remember 06/06/06 and everyone went mad (they aired an episode of Doctor Who close to that date and it was all about The Beast)

Well if everyone is faithful Christians why are they worried about the antichrist?

That doesn't mean we can't be scared? We'll be happily in Heaven, but real people will be going through this, and it will be sad to see. And maybe even your family members can be the ones going though that..

Odd, the best things always happen to me on friday the 13's! I remember that episode.... good times.... I'm so glad we have someone able to get us the new doctor who season this year, otherwise I would go mad! (darn you CBC for dropping it!)

From Wikipedia...

616 ("six hundred and sixteen", or "six hundred sixteen" in American English) is believed by some to have been the original Number of the Beast in the Book of Revelation in the Christian Bible. Different early versions of the Book of Revelation gave different numbers, and 666 had been widely accepted as the original number. In 2005, however, a fragment of papyrus was revealed, containing the earliest known version of that part of the Book of Revelation discussing the Number of the Beast. It gave the number as 616, suggesting that this may have been the original. [1] This caused Peter Sagal on the USA's National Public Radio program Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! to quip that Hell must be in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as Grand Rapids' area code is 616. (There is a Hell, Michigan, but its area code is 734.)

Why did the Catholic Church get so mad when the Da Vinci Code came out? I mean, it even stated at the beginning that it was a work of fiction. Maybe they're hiding something :p

I think I'm caught up to you guys, but I don't know, really. My sisters boyfriend manages to get them off the internet somewhere and we all have a big Doctor Who night.

The last epsiode we got was 'Poison Sky'... we all killed ourselves laughing at the 'are you my mommy?' bit!

That was it :-D

Doctor's Daughter next!

The Doctor knows the secrets of the Universe!

trying to get this back on topic...

Yup, it has to be written on your body, 666.
And, i have no problem with monkeys, but in Genesis it says that God created Adam and Eve. It didnt say we evolved from apes. And the bible wasnt written by men, it was written by God through men.

The bible also said a guy came back from the dead. And that all the animals in the world were fit onto a boat in pairs.

If the bible was written by god through men, then why all the countless versions and revisions? If god can't even get it straight, why should we listen to it?

yea, if you dont have 666 then you cant do anything, and starve to death/ but this happens after jesus comes for us a second time.

"It forced all the people, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to be given a stamped image image on their right hands or their foreheads, so that no one could buy or sell except one who had the stamped image of the beast's name or the number that stood for it's name.

Wisdom is needed here; one who understands can calculate the number of the beast, for it is a number that stands for a person. His number is six hundred and sixty-six."

So yeah, it would allow people to trade. I enjoy reading all the theories people have came up with to explain the image and all that. My personal favorite is the the Euro being the mark of the beast. It has 6 stars on the top, six stars on the bottom, and six lines that go through it. It's also needed to be able to trade.

Europeans are antichrists? The only logical answer is.... yes. :teacher:

Jk, of course :goodvibes

But still, it's fun stuff.

I just can't believe that by not following the Bible exactly, I'm going to Hell.
In fact, I don't even know if I believe in Hell.

Love thy neighbor as thyself.

Why is that so hard to follow?

If we really followed that, then we wouldn't be here, arguing about religion.

The Lord wants us to love everyone. At least, the Lord that I worship. I don't know about the guy that some of you worship, but he doesn't seem like such a nice guy...

lol, i just wanted to note that.. just because science tells you something, it doesnt mean that it is an absolute fact... also, if a religion tells you something, it doesnt mean that it is an absolute fact... both religion and science set out to do the same thing in a sense.. they try to explain the quesions of life.. where did we come from.. how does the world work.. etc etc... science and religion are both just trying to give insight on our lives and origins as people... science uses logic and analysis to answer questions, while religion uses philosophy and the supernatural.. i find that its best to not be dedicated to just one side... examine both sides.. both arguments.. then come to your own conclusion... its ok to be both religious and scientific... nothing wrong with agreeing with certain parts of the bible, and disagreeing with other parts... personally, i believe that there are higher beings (be it god or something else) in play, but i also believe in the mechanics of evolution and science as a whole.. make your own decisions on your beliefs... dont just take in everything that someone says to you as absolute truth

::yes::

^This is my favorite post in the whole thread. Right on! :D

Things would be better, I think, if people weren't so intent on going to extremes all the time. And a little understanding, taking the time to find out about someone else, never hurt anyone. :3

It was in the newspapers in about 2004...

Then there's loads of shows on the History Channel about the Bible and providing the scientific evidence to them.

Random question. How many sheep went onto Noah's Ark?

7. But this question has already been answered.

I have a few questionbs for Christians.

1. Do you believe that humans are animals (which we are, I just know some Christians don't for some reason)? I believe that humans are classified as animals in society's sense. But I believe that in God's eyes we are His best and greatest creation formed in the image of Him

2. If you don't believe in evolution, do you believe that the Earth is as old as it is (4.5 billion years)? No.

3. Do you dismiss the idea that life on Earth will end when the Sun turns into a red giant and will either burn up every living being or embody the Earth (I know that didn't sound very scientific but I'm not good at wording things)? I dunno. I've never read Revelations. I don't think you can really understand revelations until you've read the other 32 books.

If I remember from my RS class, people say animals don't go to heaven because they have no soul.

Here's a question I asked a couple of days ago.

If a Christian commits bad deeds because he wants to go to Hell because it's like Heaven to him, does this mean when he dies, we will go to Heaven because it's like Hell to him?

I don't think animals go to heaven. Not because they don't have a soul, but because they don't have the complexity of the ability to reason.

The bible also said a guy came back from the dead. And that all the animals in the world were fit onto a boat in pairs.

If the bible was written by god through men, then why all the countless versions and revisions? If god can't even get it straight, why should we listen to it?

Yeah. It said a couple guys came back from the dead actually.
Not all the animals in the world. 7 or 2 of all the different kinds.
And actually, miss science, Scholars have estimated that almost 45,000 animals could have fit into the boat. It was a big boat, built exactly to God's specifications.

Um. There are countless versions and revisions because it's God's will to get it to everyone in as many ways as possible. And if that means writing a ''street bible'' in language that ''street people'' can understand then we'll write it. Obviously, it had to be translated so everyone could have His word. Because at one time everyone wanted it. Just like the Harry Potter books. They've been translated into many different languages because of the high demand for them too.

Who says God can't get it sraight?

Nomi and PowerMonkey, i'm sorry, but I skip over most of your posts. They're filled with too much scientific garble for me. I hate science class, and that's what they seem like. So I skim them. So sorry if I miss major points or anything.

For Christians who do believe that all other animals besides humans are soul-less and do not go to Heaven, I don't understand how they could possibly find Heaven to be any type of paradise at all without other animals besides humans. But then again, if you have the nerve to say other animals are soul-less (because if there are souls humans definitly aren't the only ones to have them), I guess you don't really love them that much anyway.

And Katie, if you don't believe that Earth is 4.5 billion years old, how old do you think it is? Do you think that humans have existed for as long as Earth has existed?

I have a question and hope it doens't come off as rude. Please keep in mind I am not very educated in the area of religion.

Who or What is God?
Is he a person, a spirit in the sky, an animal, something else?
Once a person who is now a spirit?
I'm just wondering what everyone perceives God as.

Ahhh, I'm going to a Catholic school next year...
That means religion class.
Eeeek. I'm actually kinda scared about that.

It's not gonna be like sunday school... my preacher teaches sunday school, and she's just awesome.

The religion teacher's gonna be scary and strict and... erm, determined about her beliefs.. I just know it.

God, to me, is the good inside of each of us. God is in everything, he's everywhere.
He's not a guy in the sky with a big white beard.
And, though I'm Christian, and I believe that Jesus existed, I don't know if he did the miracles or whatever.
There's no way of knowing for sure.
God is the voice in my head who tells me right from wrong. He loves me for who I am, and doesn't try to make me into something else.

In the first place, can you please give me a source where these scholars have posted their findings? (It's funny that you call me miss science, I'm an art student  )

Well seeing that there are roughly 1 -2 million named species, that boat would need room for 4 million species. Seeing as how the world was supposedly flooded, they would have to carry not only all terrestial animals (reptiles, amphibians, mammals, insects, ect....) the ark would also have to carry all freshwater fish and most birds. On top of that, the ark would also have to carry food and supplies for all these animals, which would also take up a considerable amount of space (at least half the boat).

And there is also no evidence for a global flood (which, if it occured, would have a great deal of evidence). The flood in the bible was most likely an exaggeration of a flood in the red sea or in the surrounding area.

Um. There are countless versions and revisions because it's God's will to get it to everyone in as many ways as possible. Really? I'm not just talking languages, I mean changes within the content and rules put forth in the bible to suit the needs of whoever was using it to control the population, let alone languages. And why all the assumption that it's your bible that is 'his word'? You do realize that there are many other religions with a holy text, and there is nothing that makes the bible so special. Like most holy texts the bible is just an accumulation of older religions and mythology, as well as changes made by people to suit them and/or the veiwpoints of that time.

Who says God can't get it sraight?

You do not understand something, so you ignore it and decide it must not be true? Thats a great way to go about things....

An interesting side note. I love science, but I'm usually bored stiff in bio... I think it's just the format in which things are taught. The teracher makes a big difference too. Last year I had a great bio teacher, and the class was very fun and interesting. This year, my bio teacher was boring, and the difference is very noticable. Most kids fall asleep.

No offence Katie, but if you skim over most of Nomi's posts, maybe you shouldn't be so snippy towards her:confused3
again, no offence but the "miss science" comment came off as really rude.
these threads about religion & gay marrige and such are getting really vicious.

but I do have a valid question for super religious people,
do you believe in Dinosaurs & cavemen?????
Because I don't believe Dinosaurs are mentioned in the Bible,
where do they fit in in the historical timeline??

i truly would like to know, i obviously don't know the answer and I'd like to hear everyones take.

guys, i know this is a really controversial topic, and i know you all have strong opinions. but i just figured that we were all mature enough to keep it clean. if i was wrong about that, tell me now.

Personally, I think katy's faith is a beautiful thing.

But I also find nomi's well thought out, well educated posts enlightening.

but katy, i think that if you admit to not actually reading her posts, yet continuing to argue with her, well that just comes off as ignorant to me. flat out. not trying to be rude or anything like that, just my honest opinion.

fighting isn't cool. if you can't express your opinions without personal attacks (i.e. miss science) well then if you can't say nothin' nice....

keep it polite, you guys. i don't want this thread to turn out in another big fight with feelings hurt.
