MY DD 3 1/2 is in preschool and parents usually send in little things to give out ( the kids take them home) at holidays.

I was thinking of making small pakages of "reindeer food" for the kids to put out on Christmas eve....

They get so many treats and stickers, small toys etc..I thought this would be fun...

As far as I know all of the children celebrate christmas..

What do you think?

I think this would be a clever gift. I remember when my kids were small, they came home with little bags of this and they were so excited to sprinkle it on the ground on Christmas Eve. I also remember a poem or saying that went with it, although for the life of me, I can't remember what it said. Hopefully there is a teacher or two here on the boards that can help with this.

What would you use? Don't all the childrens books mention reindeer eating carrots or apples? Maybe sugar cubes.

I send my child in with Christmas pencils, Christmas themed erasers, and some Christmas candy all in little Santa bags.

My kids enjoy doing this every year. I think it'd be a neat gift for the kids to get!

We use oatmeal mixed with glitter---the glitter sparkles with the moonlight so it makes it easy for the reindeer to find. And the oatmeal is because it's the easiest substance for DH to grind up with his heel to get rid of the evidence. :rotfl:

I have real deers in my yard - won't glitter be toxic?

Hmmm, you could be right - maybe mix oatmeal with colored sugar for the sparkle - red and green sugar?

Glitter is harmful to the wild critters that share space with us. Another thread regarding this topic suggested red and green sprinkles (jimmies) or some other candy topping mixed in with the oatmeal and the sugar.

Maybe you could use some of the sugar sprinkles like for cookies.

I found a few recipies online...

Many have the glitter but some say the glitter could be harmful to any critters that may eat it and substitute colored sugar or sprinkles.

Mostly its just uncooked oatmeal ...

and I found this poem:

Sprinkle on the lawn at night
The moon will make it sparkle bright
As Santa's reindeer fly and roam
This will guide them to your home.

I was afraid of the kids eating it by mistake when I first thought of giving this too..so I think I will used the colored sugar..just in case....

Thanks ..I think I will do it....

DS always makes a package of "reindeer food" at Breakfast with Santa each year -- it's natural stuff, though, like twigs and straw and hay. :) :)

Yep, that's what we do. Oatmeal and the colored bakers sugar. I would also do that so if the kids decide to take a taste they are not eating glitter. My daughter is in kindergarten and they like to dare eachother to eat anything. :confused3

I hadn't thought about the glitter issue--the only wild creatures we see in our yard are snakes. I could care less if they eat the glitter. :rotfl:

Great minds!

Never been accused of having a great mind. :rotfl2: Thanks!

In my 1st grade class, we use the oatmeal & colored sugar crystals.
I posted the poem (not the same one as above) on another thread on this topic last week. I can post again if you like.

My DD and I started making her bags for the cheer squad and her class. I would love to read other poems you have used in the past. During the holidays my creativity is turned off when it comes to things like this. :goodvibes

My two DD's who are in Kindergarten each came home with bags of reindeer food this afternoon. It had this poem inside:

Take this magic reindeer food
And sprinkle it on the lawn
Cause all of Santa's reindeer
Will arrive before dawn

The smell of oats and sparkling path
Will guide them on their way
You'll wake up then to Santa's gifts
Next morn, on Christmas Day!

It was a cute idea, but they put glitter in with the food. We have wild turkeys, rabbits, skunks, raccoons, coyotes, and deer that all roam in our back yard. I can't put this out.

They were so excited though I didn't have the heart to tell them no, so I just put it up for "safe keeping" until X-mas Eve. Then after they went to sleep I tossed it out. Now between now and then I have to go out and get something to replace it with minus the glitter.

TIS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS AND SINCE EVERY YEAR,
YOU FEED SANTA CLAUS,
NOW FEED HIS REINDEER!

1. Wait until Christmas Eve
2. Open reindeer food & sprinkle it on the lawn
3. Quick! Jump into bed!!
4. While you're asleep, Santa's reindeer will come & eat all the food
you have left on the lawn.

CONTENTS: Enough reindeer food for Rudolph & 8 of his tiny friends

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I am a preschool teacher and I am making bags and bags of this to send home with my students tomorrow.

A few years ago I wrote a poem to go along with the reindeer food I send home.

Here it is..feel free to use it.

Reindeer Food

Sprinkle on the ground on Christmas Eve.

Hop into bed..... no peeking please.

The magic dust will shine so bright.

Santa will surely see it during his flight.

Down he will come, sleigh laden with toys

Leaving behind surprises for good girls and boys.
Ms. Jennifer

and please please please do NOT use glitter. It is as bad for our animals as eating glass would be to us.
