Reincarnation?

Probably not what you're looking for...

Throughout my late childhood and teens, I was friends with a girl whose family was.......Well, different and colorful. The mom always had a yappy lap dog and they just weren't BIG dog people.

One day I came over and there was a big black lab hanging around. I asked about it and they said it was Grandpa. I said, "You named the dog GRANDPA?" and my friend replied without batting an eye, "No, it IS Grandpa." Turns out this dog had shown up and the whole family was convinced it was their dearly departed grandfather. The mom was on the phone, calling the entire extended (also colorful) family to come over and see for themselves. As she said, all you had to do was look in the dog's eyes to KNOW it was Grandpa. And yes, the family bit and come came over.

I think I was 13 or so, but I was the only skeptic. :rotfl2: Grandpa stayed for a while, then I believe he took off. No worries, he just dropped by to say hello and let them know he was okay.

I might be willing to believe some stories of reincarnation, but I could never swallow that one. He just looked like a big old black lab to me. But then, I never knew Grandpa............

Haha...makes me wonder what Grandpa was like!

I was never a believer until I had my youngest son. He spoke very early and when he did he would pretend to talk on the phone to his friend "Rick"(btw he was not using a phone). I figured, okay I have a degree in psych my child has an imaginary friend I can handle it. However when I asked what he was doing he said, he was talking to Rick and that Rick was still over there. He said that HE my son had been a general in the army and Rick was a sargent who used to drive my son(general) and that Rick saved his life(keep in mind my son was around 2).

He said one night he had gotten drunk and he was throwing up and on his back and rick turned him over so he would not choke.
The reason this was so startling was taht first I was a SAM at the time, my son watched NOTHING but Sesame St. Disney videos and Mr. Rogers. I went with him anywhere he went. I did not allow any guns etc (toy) and I knew NOTHING about the army or how the ranking went. I had to ask my dad who btw had been in the navy what branch of the sevice had general and sergant.
I also asked only what my son was doing and NO other questions he volunteered all the information.

Furthermore my son told me that he had chosen to come to me and my husband and that he did not know us from before but that he had known Grammy (my husband's mother) and Auntie(my sister ) from before. He talked to Rick for a while and then it faded.

I have to say also that even though he had not watched any violence on tv he used to try to make guns out of a variety of objects and shoot them. Neither my husband or I drink so even the idea of know what being drunk was at a little over 2 years should have been foreign to him.

After dealing with my son I began reading everything I could about reincarnation. It seems the theory is that lots of kids who speak early can relate their previous lives but as they grow older the memory fades.

That's really interesting. My DD was an early (and non-stop) talker, but she never told a story like that.

But a few weeks ago my DH was working out of town so we were going to watch a movie in my room and have a sleepover. After the movie was over and we were going to sleep, she started crying. I asked her what was wrong, if she missed Daddy? And she said "no, but I'm afraid you might not be my mommy next time".

I questioned her a little and she basically told me that she couldn't remember the last time she was a kid now and was afraid next time she is a baby she might have a different family. We didn't talk about it anymore, but I did tell her there was a name for that and it is "reincarnation". Since then she's been looking online for stories, etc.

I'm not a religious person and really have never given reincarnation a thought one way or the other. But to her it's just a fact of life.

I don't believe in reincarnation BUT I believe in this theory.

Think about it. Your DNA contains thousands of cells from other people. Those people have stories. I really think a lot of the 'memories' that people have of are the people that they come from.

I have to take a moment and applaud the irony of someone named holycow commenting on their non-belief in reincarnation.

Carry on.

Fascinating subject. I don't know what I believe about this but I tend to think that there is a reason why people 'remember' so much about past lives. Whether it's true reincarnation, someone else's DNA or whatever, hypnosis regression also seems to indicate 'something'.

The famous general George Patton was a believer in this, you may want to look into his writings. He thought he had been in famous battles all throughout history.

That one story is very disturbing to me. If this is true, it puts a lot of religous beliefs in question IMO. Not that mine are, but its disturbing.

I think one possibility is that maybe people are thrown back into the mix that don't make it the first time. In other words, bad in past life, don't make it to heaven, instead of going to bad place, they are reincarnated to start again in the hopes they make it through this time. :confused3 I hope that is the case if it is true.

Maybe this is what Purgatory is all about. That is, if you believe in Purgatory of course.

My personal beliefs are that you do indeed come back over and over again to learn new things and to better yourself. I also think you make it back home to Heaven in between each new visit here on Earth.

I should add that I have no idea why I believe what I do. I was raised Catholic, (and raise my own kids Catholic). I *should* believe that we all just go right to Heaven and live for all eternity there. Somehow, I believe otherwise.

Could be, and yes I do. Maybe there are levels of purgatory. This maybe one. I guess that alternative is better than being stuck as a ghost on this forsaken planet.

I used to know a guy who said his first memory of life was being in a car accident -- people standing over him and saying what a tragedy, etc. and the very next memory being that of being born -- handed to his mother who had just given birth. He truly believed that in that in the moments following his death, he was reborn.

For me personally, I've always found it odd that I have recurring dreams about military helicopters crashing (I get extremely creeped out if I see them in real life), and I can't watch movies about the Vietnam War. Incidentally, I was born in 1970.

Don't know if there is anything to any of it, but it is something I have wondered about from time to time..

Very interesting stories. Not sure how I feel about reincarnation, but there seems some validity to it.

A friend became a believer due to an experience with her younger son. Almost as soon as he could speak he would cry and say to her, "I want to go home, I want to go home."

She and her husband would comfort him and assure him that he was home with his mommy and daddy and safe and loved.

He would shake his head and cry again, "But, I want to go home. I want to go home".

My friend and her husband found this rather unnerving but didn't know what to do about it. They would just reassure him he was at home and safe.

He never explained further and eventually outgrew this.

There is a book called "Soul Survivor" about a little boy who seemed to be an air force pilot in a previous life. It may be of particular interest to Bella the Ball 360 as it has similarities to her son's experience.

In reincarnation, or the theories there of you stay in the same soul type family--so humans only come back as humans, animals as animals, etc.

Yep, I agree with this. I don't believe for a second that a human comes back as a gerbil or tadpole and so on, so forth.

Personally I don't believe in the reincarnation of a soul but since Hinduism is a major world religion that accepts reincarnation as a basic tenet of the faith I would think you could find bunches about the belief system if you look at any Indian based work.

I do think there is some truth to Karma.
