It's been more years than I can remember since I've had to register a used car with DMV. In fact, I think I've done it once in my lifetime so call me someone illiterate on this subject.

My DD just bought a used car from a private seller. Can someone walk me through what we need to do? We've only paid a deposit at this point in time. She is going tomorrow to pay the final balance. I know we need to check the title and make sure the VIN #, name, make, model, etc. all match the car and seller. As well, the seller needs to complete the odometer and damage information on the back of the title. I know if there are any liens listed, we need an "original" lien release from the stated parties/bank. I know the owner needs to fill out a sales tax form from DMV and an MV-103 form needs to be completed (based on what I found on DMV website).

We are transferring plates off a car we just junked yesterday. I know I have to call my insurance agent in the morning and get the car on our insurance, etc. and get a new insurance card and remove the old car.

What in praytell do i do next? I know the car should not be driven until I have plates and registration, but I don't want to leave it there either. Time is an issue since I'm working around work/college schedules. Can I put the plates on it just to get it to my driveway and nothing more? I don't think I can get to DMV until Friday and we'll pay for it tomorrow. Of course, I know I'm totally dead if something happens on that drive home.

Also, has anyone ever bought a car and had someone else register it? My DD will own the car but according to our insurance agent it needs to be registered in our names to be part of our policy. She's only 18 as well! Should I just sign everything as if I bought it and keep her name off everything?

I'm sooooooo confused...............
