I really started thinking about this awhile ago and in the last few days decided it was time to do it. I just signed up to be a Make A Wish volunteer here in the Central Virginia area.

I hadn't done much volunteer work since we moved here three years ago and I knew I wanted to do something in 2009. I thought about MAW and then read a few of the many Wish trip reports here on the DIS and decided this is how I wanted to spend my time, helping the children who were not blessed with the health that my now grown kids were blessed with.

I have to go through the training and such and hope to be a wish grantor in the very near future.

Just wanted to share with everyone here, cause I knew you would understand my excitement. Do any of you work with MAW? What other volunteer work does the podcast followers do?

I have a friend who is a MAW wish grantor here in fl. There first assignment was taking a child to WDW. Its an awsome organaztion.

I'm a volunteer Child Passenger Safety Technician.

Basically, I help parents (or other caregivers) make sure that their children's car seats are installed and used properly.

I've been a certified CPST since June of 2003. CPSTs take a four day class for their initial certification and then we have to recertify every two years (process includes educational hours and in person reviews of installed seats).

Most CPSTs in my area are certified for the jobs (nurses, police officers, health workers, fire or ambulance, etc). I'm a graphic artist during the week...but volunteer at weekend checks which the local coordinators love since the techs that do this for the jobs prefer not to work on Saturdays!

I really enjoy volunteering and like to know that I'm making a positive impact on the safety of the children in my extended community!

With my current travel schedule I don't have the time to volunteer but when I did I used to work with the rape crises center, on the hotline.

I think the MAW would be great, while I got a lot of satisfaction working on the hotline, it was a bit of a downer.

Look forward to hearing about what you end up doing.
