Regional Sandwiches

Well, I'm from New Orleans and we have the po-boy and muffeleta. Po-Boys are basically any meat (usually seafood) on a french bread loaf and a muffuletta is a sandwich on a round sicilian loaf. Typical muffulettas consists of one muffuletta loaf, split horizontally. The loaf is then covered with a marinated olive salad, then layers of capicola, salami, mortadella, emmentaler, and provolone.

I had a Po Boy the other day and thought of this thread. Anyone else have a wonderful sandwich to add.

If there's a regional sandwich here, I don't know about it. Most likely though... it would be an organic or vegan or both sandwich. That's just Portland... the kind of city I live in. We do love our beer and coffee though!

I had never heard of marshmallow fluff. I don't think I've ever seen it up here.

We don't have a regional sandwich, but my hometown has been the Slurpee capitol of the world for the past 11 years running. This is a feat in itself, but add in the fact that for a good part of the year we are in subzero temps ( sometimes -30C ) and that makes us either awesome or downright silly :rotfl2:

West Central FL here - it's all about the grouper sandwich! Fried, blackened, broiled - your choice, so long as it's a big chunk of fresh-caught grouper on a bun. :thumbsup2

Sorry! For those still wondering, "weck" is short for "kimmelweck" - which is a kind of roll. It's yummy and salty, and makes all the difference!

::yes:: I'm a former Buffalonion and it's the kimmelweck roll that makes it a "beef on weck." FYI, none are better than Anderson's. (THAT should spark some debate among the Western NYers, lol! ;) )

Hi Marcie. :wave2:

We have combos....beef and sausage....probably twice a month. You miss those????

Chicken fried steak sandwich on Texas toast, smothered in white country gravy. Amazingly delicious. :)

I know someone mentioned them earlier in the thread but NY System Hot Wieners are Da Bomb!! I grew up in RI and you can't get them anywhere else. My DH has to have them every time we go back to visit.
Check them out here:

Best thing in the world at 3am after leaving the bar. :lmao:

Haven't read the whole thread yet but Runzas are popular here. Mini loaves of bread baked around ground beef and cabbage. Several different flavors, plain, cheese, italian, mushroom&swiss.

I'm originally from Buffalo and miss beef on weck and fried bolony, & royal subs! Not sandwiches but people here never heard of loganberry drink.

Mmm..this thread is lovely!!!!

I'm originally from Philly, moved to Fort Lauderdale/S. Florida for 20 years and now reside in Jacksonville, FL (considered "deep south" here). So I can really appreciate those cheesesteaks -- Capriotis in Delaware is the BEST I've ever had, including anywhere in center city philly), as well as those Cuban sammies down in south Florida.

Here in Jacksonville, there's lots of barbeque sandwiches, mostly pulled pork, but there's some brisket and short rib to be found, too. Fish sandwiches, yeah, lots of grouper. We have a chain here called Lubi's, which is crumbled hamburger meat that's seasoned and cooked with onion, put in a hoagie roll and then topped with a variety of ingredients -- it has a smear of mayo or sour cream to keep the meat in, and you eat it with a knife and fork. We're also real big on slaw dogs -- sweet coleslaw on a hot dog. I'd never heard of such a thing until I moved here. But it's really good.

I would say tomato sandwiches, but we ate these up North, so I don't think these are regional to the South. NE tomatoes are much better than our southern tomatoes, anyway.

I'm very intrigued with the Italian beef from Chicago.

There was a burger chain in south Florida when I lived there called Hot and Now, and they had olive burgers. They were friggin' amazing. I still like olives on my burgers, but it's just not the same on a homemade burger.

Hot and Now ... what a name!!! Sounds like a brothel.

I don't think we have anything special around these parts but my two favorite sandwiches ever are a muffuletta from Central Grocery and a cuban from Isamar Bakery in Luquillo, Puerto Rico. YUM! :thumbsup2

Here in Philly it is the Philly cheesesteak. I have had them in other places and trust me they are not Philly cheesesteaks. It has to do with the rolls and the meat.

Agreed, even in the Lehigh Valley. Also, hoagies aren't the same anywhere else if you ask me! (again, I think it's the rolls!)

In Southern Arizona I'd have to go with the Sonoran Dog. Hog dog wrapped in bacon, grilled and served in a nice big squishy bun with beans, tomatoes, cheese, mayo, and jalepeno sauce. I think I'm missing an ingredient, but can't remember what right now. These are amazing and sold from carts all over town, as well as a few drive-ins.

Hey Dan!

Craig and I most definitely miss those. The beef/sausage combo is Craig's favorite. I usually stick with either a beef or a sausage. Much to his delight, when I get the combo he usually gets half of it. I love it with sports peppers or the Giardinara (I probably spelled that incorrectly)

My son and I went into Chicago the day after the Blackhawks celebration and ate at Gino's East. We did NOT eat a sandwich that day.

South Louisiana is known for two sandwiches...

Po-boy made with fried shrimp, fish, or oysters served on baguette-like Louisiana French bread.

Muffaletta - a circular loaf of soft Italian bread is sliced horizontally and piled with salami, ham, and provolone, which are in turn topped with a wickedly spicy melange of chopped green and black olives fragrant with anchovies and garlic.
