Regional Sandwiches

I think the only thing New Mexico has for a regional sandwich is green chile cheeseburgers.

Yeah, I've heard of those. They sound good but.. I bet ours in Iowa are better. I had to give My2Cinderellas a hard time though, since she's from Iowa and said she doesn't like them - I think that's the first time I've heard an Iowan say that!

add me to the Iowans who don't like made-rites club. Now Runza on the other hand I DO like. I remember the big deal at the local Made-Rite shop when Roseanne married the Iowa guy and then opened a Made-Rite type store on the show. maybe looking at Tom Arnold on the wall helped along my Made Rite hatred :rotfl:

I don't know if it's necessarily a local thing, but I could really go for a pastrami sandwich from Katz's in NYC! Yummy to all the Jewish delis!

You beat me to posting about a good, thick pastrami sandwich. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 Our delis here make sandwiches with the meat piled high about 1 1/2 - 2 inches high.

Please don't confuse the "pastrami" that they sell at Subway with real pastrami. That's like on the grilled cheese thread when people compared American cheese & Velveeta to real, aged cheddar. Not even close! :upsidedow

We also serve a good brisket sandwich.

Mmmmmm... beef on weck! That's exactly what I thought of when I saw the thread title. Maybe I'll have to go get one :)
I also really, really need a beef on weck right now. Unfortunately, getting kümmelweck rolls here is impossible. When my brother died a few years ago, we had them shipped in from Buffalo.

Apparently, St. Louis is home of the St. Paul sandwich, which is an egg foo young patty (bean sprouts and minced white onions) served with dill pickle slices, white onion, mayonnaise, lettuce, and tomato between two slices of white bread. I've never had one, but several people in my family have and love them.
That actually sounds really good.

Yes, the St. Paul sandwich is a staple of every tiny little Chinese takeout in St. Louis, especially on the northern end of town, which is more working-class. They commonly sell for under $2, and are a huge seller at a popular takeout dive near my office. I've never been able to find anyone who could tell me how they got the name.

When I first came to St. Louis 20 yrs ago, brain sandwiches were still very popular on the South Side. (That is, calf brain, sliced, breaded and fried like chicken fried steak. They were served on rye with pickles. These are almost impossible to get now, because of Mad Cow Disease.

My MIL is a native St. Louisan, and she fed her children fried bologna sandwiches (with mustard on white bread) as a regular thing when they were growing up. She grew up in really dire poverty, and regarded those sandwiches as a high treat.

As for getting olives on a hamburger, if you visit New Orleans you'll be in luck, because any local place will have olive mix on hand -- for the muffalettas, you understand. It contains more than just olives, but you'll love it, LOL!

Massachusetts here... I grew up eating Fluff-a-nutters (or, in true Mass speak... fluffah-nuttahs). Peanut butter and Marshmallw Fluff sandwiches. It was a staple of our diet and when a friend moved here from Texas she had never heard of it... I was astounded.

Makes me want one now... but peanut buttah is banned in our house due to DS's allergy.... bummah.....

And THAT is my very favorite regional sandwich. :thumbsup2 Every time I go back, I have to stop at the Blake's in Bernalillo on my way from the airport.

I guess here in NOVA, DC, MD... we've got the best crabcake sandwiches there is... hands down!!

Not really a sandwich, but RI has "Hot Weiners". Yummy! :thumbsup2

I do love a good Philly Cheesesteak, and they aren't the same anywheres else.

:scared1:

You don't like Maid-Rites?! That's blasphemy! They're soo good.

The pork tenderloions are delicious, too - especially from Joensy's in Solon or Center Point. :lovestruc For those who have never had the pleasure, Iowa does tenderloin sandwiches BIG:

This sandwich runneth over! :rotfl:

YUMMY!!!

I'm from Buffalo and really miss, Beef on Weck. I will try and make a poor substitute by wetting some rolls and putting caraway seed and kosher salt - but it is just not as good!

Locally - we have blackened dolphin sandwiches. Yummy!

I've had or easily figured out all of the sandwiches listed here except "beef on a weck." I'm off to google. I thought in 5 pages, SOMEONE would explain in!

My grandparents were originally from Tennessee and they always made me fluffer nutters :lovestruc Definitely yummy!

So is a benedictine sandwich well-known elsewhere? I'd never heard of it until we moved here. When my mother-in-law first asked me if I wanted one, it sounded like medication.

Ok,I found a picture of a "Beef on Weck" sandwich. For all you MA people, its like a Kelly's Roast beef or Bill and Bob's or any of the 1000's of Roast Beef places we have here.

New York here and we also grew up with Fluffanuttas. When I was older I thought I was soo creative by adding raspberry jam to my fluffanutta. (must be on wonderbread also to be official)

Chiming in from MD where crab is KING! LOL.
The Crabcake sandwich(broiled) reigns supreme
Fried softcrab and fried oyster sandwiches are popular too!
