Has anyone ever purchased a refurbished Canon DSLR directly from Canon? I'm considering it for my daughter who is taking Photo I this year (film camera) and is going to take Photo II next year (digital). Not sure how serious she's going to take this so I'm not sure if it's worth, at some point, purchasing a brand new camera.

I have a Canon Dslr. Which one are you considering?

I haven't personally purchased a refurbished item from Canon, but I know someone that did....and was very pleased with the purchase. Just make sure there will be some sort of warranty period prior to purchase.

I have purchased re-furbed items from both Apple and Olympus, and can honestly say that the items were in next-to-perfect condition, and I saved a lot of money.

Just wanted to mention that Cameta Camera sells manufactured refurbished cameras and they have a 1 year warranty (through them, not the manufacturer).

We bought ours refurb thru a camera shop on eBay. Came with a one year manufacturer warranty. We bought a kit that had an extra lense, tripod, two cases, memory card, and a couple of other things. We love the camera, and have had it for several years with no issues at all!

When next year? If it's more than a few months away, you may want to wait. The refurb model you buy now may be on clearance in a few months. Try researching what new models Canon has coming out next year. At the very least you may be able to find a good deal on a used body or lens when someone else upgrades for Christmas.

Yeah this is why I asked what model. I have a D5, it's over 2K, so I wouldn't buy that for a beginner. Canon has some other models, but do your research or ask questions here on the thread. A lot of the new DSLR cameras are more suited for video than stills.

I was looking at the t3i for her. Glad everyone seems to have good experiences with refur bished cameras.

Probably looking at buying in the new year, within the next month or so. Spoke with her Photo teacher and he suggested either a t3i or t4i or a Nikon. Most of my photo friends are Canon people and my camera (SX40HS) is a Canon so I thought I'd stick with Canon.

That's where I bought my refurbished Nikon and I love it. Not a single problem with it and saved a ton of money! Had a problem with my old camera that I purchased from Cameta and they were wonderful to deal with. Will continue to buy from them!

Here are a few pics from my Rebel T3i. In fact I was snapping pics this morning. I am trying to get a few outdoor pics to make a card. I received this camera 2 yrs ago for Christmas. I am still learning on my own.

I also have a telephoto lens however I would prefer an even better lens for distance and close ups. That is where the money is, buying lenses if I had to say what is most expensive.

I would say research lenses as well as cameras.

Here is a before sunrise pic on the "night setting". My front porch.

Knockout Rose close up on the "flower setting".

Here I tried using the "moving setting" on a bee. This is on my "cigar plant" in the backyard.

And I have to throw out sunrise from my driveway. I love this pic. I don't remember if this was with the telephoto lens or not.

Great pics! Thanks for sharing. I'm definitely going to check into a refurb. If she doesn't use it, I'll learn. And if she does, then she can buy herself a new camera in a few years, if she continues on with photography.

Thank you all!!

Yeah the T3i is a good camera. I agree with the money being in the lenses. You can often times find good deals on lenses on ebay. We bought a couple of lenses that we use professionally on a day to day basis there. Good Luck!
