Refrigerator for breastfeeding mother

We required a fridge for DD's liquid amoxicillan RX and the fridge at POP was the typical size they normally use.

If they've given free fridges for the storage of baby formula, then I'm sure they would do the same for breast milk storage...

I could swear I read when reading the disablilty threads about getting a free fridge for medical needs that it was smaller(like shoebox size) than the normal fridge they rent for the $10 fee ? Does anyone know if this is true, if so it would not be large enough to hold anything other than meds?

It could be either size, you just don't know. If you tell the CM its for medicine, it could be the shoebox size. They are going to keep the dorm size available for folks that want to rent them. If you are asking for a frige to keep your meds in, you probably shouldn't expect to get the larger one.

I agree that breastmilk is not the same as medicine and demanding that Disney treat it as such seems a little silly; however, if they have a policy of free fridges for formula, they'd better have free fridges for breastmilk too. LOL. (All a moot point for me, I weaned my youngest a little after his second birthday and am now all withered and dried up :rolleyes1)

I would assume that this request (just like many of the requests at Disney) are pretty much dependant on who you get on the phone and what kind of mood they are in that day. I would call or fax, do so as nicely and undemanding as possible, and see what happens. I would also plan on a backup, whether it's paying for the fridge or a cooler or whatever.

We've had to request these before (when they weren't already provided) at WDW and I think only 1 time did we get a square dorm-sized fridge. The other times they were the rectangle dorm-sized ones.
These were always for insulin so they were free.

My DD was also on formula during our Sept trip in 09, we were given a free fridge at All Star Movies. I would mention it as soon as you arrive, I can't see why they wouldn't give it for free.

When we requested one at CR for medical needs a few years back (before there were fridges in all mod and deluxe rooms), we received a shoebox size fridge. It did not work very well and did not really keep the medicine very cold.

I would have never thought to ask. When we took me neice when she was 18 months old, we took a cooler and kept it filled with ice!

I think if they have given it out for formula then they should give it out for breastmilk as well. However I dont consider it a medical need. Therefore if they choose to charge you then you should gladly pay.

Get you a $2 styrofoam cooler from Walmart and fill it with ice from the ice machine in your building. Easy Peasy. nd it is colder than most of those fridges anyway.

Breast milk and formula are FOOD so pay the $10.

Ok let me just add my opinion...I breastfed both of my DDs got a lot of info from LeLeeche League (think that's right the kids are now mid 30's) and agree if possible its the best start in life, moms should breastfeed anywhere, etc...BUT honestly how can it be called a medical need? It is a choice..albiet a great choice, but where would it end? Someone who needed to refrigerate juice because it keeps them "regular" if you get what I mean....not trying to stir any pots here but why should WDW give free anything? Yes insulin and other medicines that need refrig but then it will be babyfood in jars, children that drink whole milk, hey I want flavored coffee creamer & when I open it it needs refrigeration...again my choice (and yes maybe not the best example) but is anyone seeing the reasoning behind my thinking?

We got a free fridge in Pop(several years ago, so things may have changed) for breastmilk storage. I think maybe breastmilk is a medical need in some cases. DD was premature by 4 months. They called breastmilk liquid gold in the NICU. Because she spent her first months eating from a tube in her belly, she never caught on to breastfeeding, but I didn't want to deprive her of "liquid gold" I continued to pump, and we got the free fridge from Pop when she was 9 months old.
I never had to explain that to Pop, I just asked about a fridge for my baby's milk, and they said it would be free. I have also had a free fridge for formula for DS, and also a free fridge for storing my vials for my allergy injections.(on other visits) I thought these were legitimate reasons, I explained why I needed a fridge, and they never hesitated...they just told me no charge for the fridge. I would just tell them you need it for your baby's milk, it worked for me!

Here's my thoughts -- if a CM gives you pixie dust and doesn't charge you for your fridge if you tell them it's for breastmilk then that is awesome. :thumbsup2 However if someone doesn't get a fridge that they 100% need because their medication needs to be refrigerated and they cannot get one because someone got a freebe for their own convenience to store extra pumped breastmilk then I'd take issue.

I say request a fridge, be honest and tell them why you want it and hope for pixie-dust :) but don't expect a fridge to be given as a medical fridge for breast milk at no cost.

I will be requesting a frig for my meds since I am a diabetic. I am wondering what size it is? Is it a small cubed 1.7 cubic or bigger than that. People have told me it is dorm size but not for sure what size that is.

1) Actually, it IS NOT a "dorm size" fridge.
2) A medical fridge is a little bigger than a flat shoebox - less than 1 cuft.
3) Big enough for insulin, etc - but not for milk, soda, or food.

Condsidering that the TSA treats expressed breast milk the same as other medications (not limited to the 3 oz rule and you are allowed to bring it on the airplane in a cooler with ice), I can't imagine that it wouldn't also be eligible for a medical fridge at a Disney hotel. Wishing you the best OP!

My feeling too...and to the pp ( Starlight Starbright) that quoted my other post..I hope your children are healthy & safe and given your circumstances yes medical need BUT I'm sure you are the exception to the rule...we're talking choice here..

Not a great analogy - TSA also lets you bring milk/juice for infants and toddlers. WDW is not going to give you a fridge for milk and juice (for normal, healthy infants and toddlers).

Thank You, DD is perfect, she is my miracle. DS was not premature, so I am blessed for sure:cloud9:

I'm actually surprised Disney does not have fridges in all their rooms free of charge. Almost all hotels/motels, even cheap ones that I have stayed at recently have them.

I would suggest getting one of those disposable coolers, unless you have a regular one, and keep the milk in there. Just stock it full of ice before you leave every morning. The ice will actually keep it cooler than a fridge would. Guest services may not let you take the fridge for free for milk storage, as milk of course is a necessity, but not a medical need. You could always ask though, it wouldn't hurt. I would suggest double bagging the milk in case it gets sideways in the cooler, and use the really heavy duty storage bags. I am not sure of your circumstances as far as pumping and storage go, but wanted to mention that if you are a breastfeeding mother, Disney is very accommodating. You can rest and feed in the first aid or baby care centers without any concern, just tell them what you need to do, and they will welcome you in. If you are planning to bottle feed to avoid breastfeeding in public, you will find places where you can do it in private or even off in a quiet corner. This may eliminate the need for pumping and storage altogether. :wizard:

Sorry I have to disagree. This is not true.
We were at Disney twice last year and requested a fridge at POP because DH has insulin and it was a full dorm size fridge. It was NOT small like a shoebox.

I think they have both and if they have a bigger one when you arrive that is what you get, if not they hold the smaller ones back when there is a medical request and no dorm fridges are available.
