Refreshments After Baptism? Thoughts...?

Our DD will be baptized in a couple of weeks, and I am starting to think about what we should do for refreshments afterwards.

We know we WILL have cake and coffee/tea/soft drinks, but we are still up in the air as far as to whether or not to serve food, because the baptism is at 1:30pm, and we'd be back to our house by 2:15-2:30pm at the latest, from what was discussed in our baptism class.

Would you serve food (lunch food, or maybe some snacks or appetizer-type food?) before the cake, or just cake?

I'd assume that, by 1:30pm, most would have eaten lunch already, and by 2:30pm, wouldn't be quite ready for dinner?

What did you serve after your child's baptism? Any other thoughts? Thanks! :goodvibes

At the most, just light munchies would probably e nice.

But just the cake is perfectly acceptable. The light munchies on the side would work just in case someone can't have cake.

Definitely not a meal at that time of day unless you know they had attended mass/services just before the baptism. Then they may be famished.

If the Baptism is at 1:30 you do not have to serve lunch type food. Cake is perfect. People can eat before they attend. IF you want to serve some snack food, that would be very nice of you. I would make it clear to people, "We'll be having cake and coffee after church," that way there are no surprises for people expecting more food.

Thank you! This is what I am worried about! I hate to order a bunch of food, only to have no one eat it, but then, I hate to just have cake and have someone starve! ;)

Good idea, if we decide no food. Thanks!

We catered in an early dinner/late lunch. That's pretty much the norm around here. Just cover your bases on the invite with a "lunch will be served" or "cake and coffee" will be served so people know what to expect.

It is customary in our family to serve a pretty big meal after. If the Baptism is at 1:30 depending on how far folks have to travel they may not have had lunch. For some of our family, they had to be in their car by 11:30 and therfore only had breakfast.

We have Church at 9:00 and had the baptisms during church.

For my son we had coffee hour after church in the fellowship hall, with cake, punch, and some other breakfasty pastries.
THen the family/friends that didnt have to get on the road came back to the house and we ate the leftover overs from by graduation party the day before. It was a busy weekend, my high school grad and a baptism in less then 24 hours.

For my daughter, we again had the coffee hour after church with cake punch and breakfasty foods. Then family and friends went back to my mothers house were we had a full spread for lunch

I say cake is fine. If you want something to go with the cake maybe some fresh fruit cut up and maybe some almonds or other nuts?

I would serve food as it wouldn't surprise me that your guests maybe hungry and/or may actually be expecting lunch to be served afterwards ... Unless of course you send invitations inviting your guests to your home after the baptism to join you for "cake and coffee" (I have received invitations like this) - this way it tells your guests to eat before they come ;) ...

Otherwise, if you don't want too many leftovers or anything too fancy, I would just get some subs, salads, chips, vegetable w/dip tray, cake & coffee - quick, simple and leftovers that probably won't go to waste ... :)

I would do veggie tray, fruit tray maybe. Snacks. What did you say on the invite , come back for cake then I think this is all you need with snacks maybe.

How long will they be staying is another question. If it were my family they would be still there for dinner.

We had a party afterwards and had food.

It is this way around here too -- we have baptisms at 1:30 -- done by 2:30 and then usually go to the person's house by2:45/ 3 with snacks out and dinner food served by 4:00pm.

Ditto.

Guests were back at our house by 3. We planned on having food out at 4. We hired someone that came in and cooked on two grills in our backyard so my husband wouldn't have to do it. We had snacks (fruit, veggie, chips and dips, then hot dogs hamburgers and chicken with salads then cake) You should have seen everyone lined up filling their plates. People were HUNGRY!

Same here - doesn't matter what time of day, if it's a party, snacks and then a meal. We tend to just eat a late breakfast in the morning, in anticipation of an early dinner (2 meal day).

I should have said that it isn't going to be a big "party", more of a get together for everyone to see DD... Unfortunately, my parents and I, we don't talk to my side of the family, and DH and I doubt many people from his side will attend. So, just friends, grandparents, great-grandparents, and a few other family members.

I've decided to do cake and something small to eat. We are pretty sure most will be heading home by 4pm. ;)

Thanks again, everyone!

Same here. It would be totally unheard of to have a party of any kind and not serve a meal, regardless of the time of the party.

We are having my DS's baptism this weekend. Church starts at noon, and party at our house afterwards. We are having it catered by a local Italian restaurant (they don't serve, just provide the food and chafing dishes). I'm making the apps and salad, and of course getting a cake from the bakery.

I'm in NJ though, and we love to have lots of food at parties! LOL!!!
