Refillable Mug

Ahhh the resort mug thread.. back and kicking :lmao: .

Rather them bash anyone one for a simple question or opinion stated here I will simply leave this little guy to ponder the subject of selling his fast pass to the highest bidder. Seems like a good place to drop him off.

Carry on!

I cringe when I see the titles of some of the threads regarding re-using mugs, is my kid too big for a stroller, ecv/wheelchairs, and pool hopping, because just about every time, the threads turn the same way.

Honestly, I think some people are new and just asking questions and not necessarily wanting to be lectured or judged or told they don't have morals. Just wanting an answer to a question. That's all.
They might not be purposely trying to stir the pot, but the way they get flamed makes me (and probably them) feel ridiculous for even considering asking such a thing. Remember, these boards are supposed to be helpful and informative.

It it's against Disney policy, by all means, let them know in a polite way. No judgements or assumptions necessary. We're not talking politics or religion, just tips for a FUN Disney vacation!

I also have a life with big people's worries..
Ya. Me too. We're burying my husband's father day after tomorrow. He finally fell asleep a little while ago, but I'm still wired so I'm on the Dis. Could be cause I'm worried about my mom - she's dying from cirrhosis due to an autoimmune disorder. It's completely different from the TWO autoimmune syndromes i suffer from. Odd how they're all so completely different. In a way it's almost nice to be off work for the funeral since DH and I see each other so little - the 60 hour work weeks I have to put in make it hard to spend time together, and taking care of his dad and my mom has taken up a lot of both of our time. Really messes with DH's blood sugar. He's been a type I diabetic for 50 years. Seriously. Didn't even have monitors or disposable needles when he was diagnosed. I don't think you want me to go on.

I'm sorry...I think I may have forgotten your point...oh yeah, big people worries. I have the entire T-shirt wardrobe for those. I've been a big person for a great many years. It's how I developed all these, um, convictions and standards that I follow to live my life. Even over little bitty inconsequential things like mug refills.

Honesty is honesty, no matter what the situation. I don't download music illegally, either, even though the difference would only be a buck per song. I'm sure there are a zillion examples out there. And you know what's really amazing? I'm one of those bleeding heart liberals that the right wing thinks doesn't have any morals! :hippie:

Like I said, didn't mean to start anything and this is my last post on the subject. Wasn't going to schlep the mugs I have on our next vacation anyway and I'm not going to spend the $20 to buy new ones. I just stated my honest opinion and wanted another question answered. Didn't think I'd be attacked. I too have been through alot over the last year, buried my father last September after his battle with lung cancer after only being diagnosed 2 months before, lived through my DH's diagnosis with type 2 diabetes, his several months out of work, 2 hospitalizations, toe amputation, 2 foot surgeries, nursing my 80 year old mother back to health after her 4th hip replacement, my best friend's scare with kidney cancer and having to have her kidney removed, giving birth to her premature daughter..so you'll forgive me if I think this whole mug issue is stupid.

I could go on but this is supposed to be a happy place..this is my diversion and am having fun posting and offering my knowledge of WDW. I'm really trying to not let this keep me from posting again and joining another board.:confused3

Don't let it get to you!

After all, you are planning a trip to Disney!!! And, an anniversary trip at that! :lovestruc

Enjoy!!!

I think most of us here are "big" people with real lives and real problems. Like most others, I have my share as well.

As I've already stated, I don't re-use my mugs. Who knows, those who do may one day be judged harshly and held accountable for doing so. However, it won't be by me, because it isn't my place to judge them. I'm sure I'll have my own mistakes to account for and my time is probably better spend planning how I'll answer for those.

I hope everyone who's posted here (on either side of the issue) has a little lighter brighter tomorrow with a smaller load of burdens.

(Lest you think I always try to take the high road, just catch me on a few line cutting threads. I guess we all have our hot button topics.)

Is it ok for multiple family members to use the same mug, or is that stealing? Just how many refills do the conscience police allow? Is there a limit to the number? Does anyone fill the mug and then pour the contents into another larger container to take to the park? Technically, then that would be stealing also. Disney expects that some people will reuse the mugs or they wouldn't allow you to refill them yourself. It's a simple solution to a problem that doesn't actually seem to BE a problem to Disney. This seems like a whole lot of hoopla over a big bunch of nothing.

I actually saw this happen last year while staying at POR. I was amazed while watching the father ( I guess) fill one Disney mug then go back to the table and empty it into a big styrofoam cup--he then went back to the drink station and did that three more times. My thought was that I was glad I was fortunate enough not to have to do that.

I guess I just sort of find it weird that a person can spend $2,000, maybe even $3,000 on a vacation (let alone most who spend 4 or 5 thousand or more) and then cheap out when it comes to a $12 mug.

If Disney's policy was "mug is good for life" then fine. But the rules are "good for the length of your stay." Really, is it up to us as a society to decide what rules we want to follow, regardless of how trivial we may find them, or how much we believe it's not hurting anyone?

Yes, I realize soda is ridiculously cheap for them to produce. But when you start getting into frozen cokes, lemonades, juice, coffee, etc, it can begin to add up. No, Disney won't miss the few dollars they're not going to get, but the bottom line is that if you didn't have the mug, you'd spend the $12 on a new one, most likely, meaning they're not losing the few cents it costs to make each soda, they're losing $12.

And again, it's not really an issue of money. I don't hold anything against anyone who chooses to re-bring their mugs - you make the decision. However, again, my point being is that it surprises me the things people will spend money on at Disney (or just in their lives in general), and then decide they'd rather not get a new mug.

I guess from my perspective there are dozens of ways to save money at WDW, nearly all of which will save you more than the cost of a mug and are things that Disney "approves" of. Bringing your own bottled water and refilling at water fountains, asking for a glass of ice water at a restaurant or coutner service location instead of buying bottled water, bringing your own snacks from home, visiting during the off-season to save money on rooms, etc. So many ways to legitimately save, why should you go up to the drink station feeling guilty every time you refill? Well, anyway, I'd at the very least feel a bit guilty refilling with a mug that I'm technically not supposed to use. The $12 is worth it for a week of not having to feel like someone is going to catch me every time I fill up.

This might be a stupid question but are the mugs at AKL likely to have changed from July earlier this year? We're going in Nov and I would love to add another new mug to my collection at home, a different design! But I suppose they haven't changed them in that short period have they?
After Nov, its going to be at least 2011 before we even think about coming back! :sad1:

Hi I am not sure if this is correct, please let me know if I am wrong . My husband and I have bought a new mug every year for the past 6 years., but last year I thought they changed the mugs to the Million Year of Dreams mug,one size, all the same. Every year I go to Disney sometimes ,twice a year and I see people carring around trays full of mugs from different resorts> Dont take me wrong but I think there are alot worse things that people can due then refill a refillable mug , free or not and I dont think Disney really
stresses on this policy because in 6 years I have never never seen them say a word to not one person. I am not saying this is right ,but think about what your saying . Our ecomomy is in one of the worst shapes its ever been in and Disney still went up on their prices. ( I LOVE DISNEY no matter what ) but I dont think they enforce this policy too much and that is their fault not the people who have gotten away with this for years.

PS I DO THINK PEOPLE TAKE WAY ADVANTAGE OF THIS SUBJECT AS STATED I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE FILLING UP 7 0R 8 MUGS AT A TIME FROM ALL DIFFERENT RESORTS

Boy you know the minute you see the title where this thread will go...down the same rabbit hole as all the others. However, rule follower that I am, I'm chimin' in with the others - I just can't seem to restrain myself! Actually, it's EXACTLY like bringing your own mug or thermos. Once you took it home from the original vacation, it became part of your home collection of glasses, along with all of your other glassware. So, when you bring it back to Disney, you just brought in your very own cup from home and are refilling it. It might as well be a 12 ounce coffee mug in your china pattern, or, if you're old like me (and remember them), it could be a jelly jar you saved and decided to bring to WDW. It's all the same. It is NO different. What it isn't, is this year's resort mug for this day's/week's vacation.

I don't care if Disney cares or not. They made the rule. They advertise the rule. You know about the rule. I know about the rule. I follow the rule, because I think being fair is being right. Life's not fair a WHOLE LOT of the time. When it's in my power to make it fair, I do.

Stepping off my soapbox. I'm very short. I do love me a good soapbox. :woohoo:
Have to disagree....I have paid Disney much more than that particular cup is actually worth...well, what it cost to produce it. Let's face it....Disney is still turning a profit on the blasted things. I would, and do, have an issue with someone who brings their water bottle and fills that at the beverage station.

Ya. Me too. We're burying my husband's father day after tomorrow. He finally fell asleep a little while ago, but I'm still wired so I'm on the Dis. You're right....there are bigger issues in life. I'm so sorry to hear of your husband's dad's passing. Hope things go okay for you.

And that's the irritating thing...to sit there, with the mug you paid for, just two days ago, and see someone belly up to the beverage station with their huge water bottle, and fill it up with Coke. At least if the guest is using a Disney mug, they have paid Disney something....those using unofficial Disney mugs are truly getting it for free.
I wish Disney would either change the rules or allow us to bring the mugs back and get a barcode for them...but those things are never going to happen. So, we continue to debate the issue.

Sorry to hear about your lost. I totally agree with you on the honesty thing,
this is an issue that people need to use their own judgement for. I think it is wrong, and I am not going to lie and say I havent done it . My husband uses his mug every year for a couple of cups of coffee::rolleyes1 I know it is wrong. WE also buy a new cup every year . Last year when we went they had changed the mug to a small mug ,same price ,all MYOD mugs (I TOUGHT)
Next week when we go we will take two mugs, but we are staying in the cabins so we are going to use them in our room for drinks We just love them because they are Disney . My wish and hope for everyone is to be honest in everything they do ,including myself.

Thanks for the info..please, I'd rather not carry that thing all over EPCOT myself but sometimes the DH can be a bigger kid than me! :goodvibes It does make sense not to bring it since a refill of the mug will cost just as much as just getting a beer in a plain cup.

As for the refillable mugs at the resorts, I really don't look at it as stealing in my opinion. Sorry, that's just me. I paid for the mug, it's not like I'm brining my own cup or thermos and filling it. My father worked in the industry for years so I know how much profit these places make on items such as soda, popcorn, etc.

It absolutely IS stealing! I paid (on our last trip) for a mug good for use during that trip only... to bring it back and use it this trip would be stealing each and every time I refill it.

When you go to McDonalds (or any other typical fast food establishment) you purchase a cup of soda/tea with unlimited refills for that visit. I can refill my tea once, twice, or even three times while there, but I cannot bring my cup back the next trip to McD's and fill it again. It is exactly the same principal, so if you would not do that, why on earth would you consider doing it at WDW?

I don't understand :confused3 people paying thousands and thousands of dollars for a trip to WDW, yet balking at the thought of buying a $13.00 mug that they can fill at their home resort the entire current trip.

There have been reports on here at times where Dis members have observed CM's not allowing refills in older mugs. :thumbsup2 It is shameful that WDW cannot rely on the honesty of their guests, they should not have to "police" the refill stations.

I could go on but this is supposed to be a happy place..this is my diversion and am having fun posting and offering my knowledge of WDW. I'm really trying to not let this keep me from posting again and joining another board.:confused3

I'm sorry people are getting so mad about this topic. Please stay:)
I know I've had people treat me the same way around here and it hurts, but after a while I realized that some people come here to blow off steam and sometimes that steam gets directed at you. Just gotta let some of it roll off your back;) There's more good than bad around here.

I don't reuse my mugs. We purchase new mugs every time we return if we intend to refill while we are visiting.

Having said that-

Something I would like to see here on the Dis would be some of the same people expressing anger and judgmental comments possibly take a different tone. Unfortunately the second you start referring to people as dishonest, rude, thieves etc etc you start to cross your own line of "morality" and your message gets lost.

If you want people to do the right thing I'd suggest simply answering the question that has been asked the best we we can. Give them the correct information as it avaliable. Then at least they will know the rule. It's not really up to people on this board to try and enforce Disney polices. And frankly it's more offensive to see everyone come out of the woodwork telling others how terrible they are for asking a question about a simple subject.

In this case, "according to Disney when you purchase the mugs they are only for the current visit you purchase them for" would be all that needs to be said.

Coming down on people, calling them names, making references to their morals etc is far worse then bringing back a plastic mug for some pop. Its rude and on some levels breaks the basic rules here on the DIS. So now we're at a catch 22. Someone expressing anger over someone breaking rules somewhere else does it by breaking rules here.

3. NO FIGHTING/SARCASM: While we'd like to think that a Disney fan site is always lighthearted, there are times when there are disagreements. Let's face it, there are certain topics that can transform any of us into a raging "Donald Duck." When you sense this is happening, we ask that you step away from the discussion before it escalates into a fight. Just like Mom always said about fighting, we don't care who started the argument and we don't want it on the DIS. (Okay, she didn't say the part about the DIS, but you know what we mean.) No attacking others and no sarcasm please. Either will result in an infraction.

That is exactly what I was trying to say earlier! I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way! Now, let's all play nice and have fun. :grouphug:

You are so right!! If others would simply answer the question, without condemning others who have differing opinions here, the DIS boards would be a much nicer place to be while posting to this type thread.
I fully understand Disney's 'policy' on reusing mugs, on 'pool hopping', on 'saving pool chaises'. They have a policy in place. BUT.....for the most part, it would seem that that policy is there 'just in case' Disney needs to invoke it, when pushed to the wall. Sure, the lifeguards will check IDs at the various pools from time to time, but not enough to prevent non-resort guests from using those pools. Even at SAB at BC, I see swimmers in the water all the time, without wrist bands.
Same thing with the refilable mugs. Is it 'legal' to reuse those mugs on subsequent visits? No, not technically, at least according to the wording on each mug. But, if you ask the CMs in the food court areas, if it's okay to reunse your mug, they will tell you yes, go right ahead. I really think that Disney jus doesn't care. If they were to see a sizable drop in the sales of the mugs, with resort capacity the same, then yes, I think they would do something. But, if it's only about 15% of the guests reusing their mugs, then no, Disney isn't going to care.
The ones we should be focusing on are those who are filling non-Disney containers at the beverage stations! They paid Disney nothing for their container....at least Disney got money from those who reuse their Disney resort mugs.

But...'stealing', 'criminal', 'not moral'?? Pretty strong wording here. It's just not worth getting all worked up over...at least not for me. Now, don't get me started on those non-BW guests who are taking up space in the chaises at the Luna Pool...that will drive you nuts. OR the people who put a towel on their chaise of choice first thing in the morning and return after lunch to swim....and sit right at the pool in that saved chaise. Those are things that directly impact other guests...reusing mugs really doesn't impact anyone else.

could not have said it better!!

I couldnt have said it better. Id rather talk about the great things that Disney offers and encourage more people to share the magic with their family and friends in the future. I was a Disney kid and my children are Disney kids and my grandchildren will and are going to be Disney kids.BABY HUNTERS 1st trip to the WORLD in 7 days:cool1: I dont think refilling a DISNEY MUG!!with a .01 soda should let us all forget that it began with a MOUSE and ONE MANS DREAM

When my husband and I purchased our first mug it was at Dixie Landings(quite awhile ago) and it did stated at the time refillable for all return trips to Disney World and all resorts. I do have the brochure dvertising this. So if I hadn't found this forum I wouldn't have known that they aren't reusable
anymore.
With that said now that I do know the policy has changed I would not take it back we will buy a new one when we go in Dec.
But I will not judge others who do for that reason.
I personally think it is a good deal that for $12 we will be able to get drinks for 9 days.
