Have always wanted to ask this...on the bottom of our AKL mugs there is a removable bottom. At first I thought you could fill it with water and freeze it, for a frosty mug, but it says do not put liquid in it. So whats it for??? Anyone know?? :confused3

I thought it was for me to take off and clean when it got a little moldy once....??????????

Any ideas......what about ice in it to freeze....but when it melts it is liquid.....so whats it for

I am pretty sure it was designed so you could throw a key in there and some loose change. Don't know why you'd want to do that, just heard that that is what it was for.

I guess the money and card key thing would make sense...I do need to remove it to wash the mug, but it never specified what exactly it was for. Thanks again. :)

This is how that manufacture designs the mug thats all. ;) I have a Mug from Outdoor World and its the SAME design but with a picture of a trout on it. ;)

That's interesting....it just seems like, if it can be removed, must be a reason for it.

DD could tell you not to put water and try and freeze it - that plastic will crack with the expansion of the water from freezing... :rolleyes1

That would totally blow! I mean.... I'm gonna need it for my next trip. :teeth: ;) KIDDING!!!!!! :rotfl2:

That removeable bottom is there to allow air into the area inside. The air pocket is there for insulation. It keeps your drink warm/cold longer. Pretty much the same principle as that new expanding spray insulation that's used in new construction. Air makes a wonderful, cheap insulator.

Yep.............it works on the same principle as a thermos.

Glad to hear someone listened to thier Science teacher! :cool1:
I was amazed by some of the answers :confused3

Okay, I have a different answer. One year at Silver Dollar City I used my refillable mug to get frozen lemonade and the lady at the counter took off my lid, took off the bottom and put the lid inside - it fits perfectly - then put the bottom back on. She then filled my frozen lemonade up about two inches above the rim. Just checked my Pop mugs and sure enough, top fits inside.

I thought it was for m&m's :teeth:

I like the m&m's idea, except knowing me, I'd forget that I had a drink in there when I turn it over to get to the m&m's. :lmao:
And, sadly, I've actually done that turning my wrist to look at my watch while holding a drink. Gotta have my stupid moments every now and then.

It can be useful for all the reasons mentioned, but the reason they are like that is simply due to the manufacturing method. A piece like this must be molded with an open end, hence the two-piece design.
