Redeeming Delta Skymiles

With Delta, among others, filing for bankruptcy, does anyone know if our flyer miles are really in jeopardy? I read a newspaper article (I think in USA Today) that said Delta travelers should use their mlles within a year. I have over 200,000 miles and no plans to use them this year. Should I be planning an unexpected "first class trip" somewhere exotic for the family?

If common sense breaks out your miles will be fine. DL is not going to abandon the program. (That said over the past few years the "redemtion requirements are creeping up. Business Class to Europe is up about 20,000 miles each next year...)

However, if the pilots strike and DL shuts down you miles will probably be worthless. Planning the trip will have done you no good. So just hang on and see.

Well heck--I did just as instructed and by golly it worked!!! You can do your own booking on delta with the skymiles to redeem them.....holding the outbound flight with a pseudo return date (as far as the system will allow you to book it). It will hold the reservation for a choice of durations up to 2 weeks...and you can go in at anytime and change it! I have my originally desired dates with sky choice now on hold (YEAH!!!). Hubby wants to stay for 2 weeks....so I will keep the ressie as is for a few more days to adjust it to what he would like.

But it worked like a charm! You just go in a click on edit intinerary (after calling up the reservation) and you can change the outbound leg to your desired date so long as you are within the 331 day booking window. I think this only works for a max of 2 week trips--so if your trip is over that amount....you wouldn't want to book the outbound flight until you are within 2 weeks of your 331 day mark on the return. (so for a 3 week trip--you wouldn't book the trip until the 324 day mark--b/c otherwise the hold window will lapse before your return date pops up).

Now I just need to plant it in my head to redeem before FRIDAY!!! Don't want to lose my skysaver points!
