Red Velvet Cake?

I am usually accepting and loving of all cakes but for some reason I just can't fall in love with Red Velvet:confused3. It tastes like nothing to me (and I've tried every Red Velvet cake that is sworn to be "the best"). It doesn't taste like chocolate but it doesn't taste like anything else. I guess it's ok, not like I really need to love it, it just baffles me why I love EVERY other type of cake but not red velvet. It does look pretty though.

I feel the same way. There really is nothing special/different about the cake portion of it. I think the novelty of the way it looks makes people want it.

We love red velvet!! Around here though most people use a fluffy cooked frosting instead of cream cheese or buttercream.

You really think all those red velvet fans are too stupid to realize that their favorite cake doesn't taste good? Maybe you just haven't had a good one.

Agreed! A great red velvet cake has a unique flavor unlike any other kind of cake. It most certainly doesn't taste like nothing. It is sweet (but not too sweet), tangy (buttermilk and or vinegar), it is nutty (either with nuts or nut flavoring), it is rich and decadent. It should have a slight chocolate taste but not overpowering. It should almost taste like a cross between a poundcake and a chocolate cake. It's hard to describe a really really good red velvet cake.

I make my own food coloring from beets. You can't tell any difference in the taste and no nasty food coloring junk in my cake! Huzzah!

thanks for that!

2. The cake must have red food coloring; beet juice does not add the right kind of red.

That article talked about a "true authentic" cake, but I just really wonder what they were using for colors when this cake was created... Seems the red dye that was originally OK'd is not around anymore, so there can't be a really authentic cake, since it's not the same. :)

Actually, I read something interesting recently...Red Velvet cake originated during WWII...

Interesting.

Who cares, it has been around for ever. Everything in moderation people, you will be fine.

Well, crushing bugs to get the red dye out of them might have been around forever, and carmine is still used in many reds, but I don't think the chemical dyes in their current state have been around forever...

Beets, on the other hand....

Yeah, I'm sure that's what it is.

I never said it didn't taste good. I, for one, enjoy the cake but, I love ALL cakes. What I said was that I don't notice anything really different about the way the cake portion of a red velvet cake tastes like. It very much tastes like a yellow cake with a little something added to it. It's not like a carrot cake or a spice cake or a pistachio cake where it's got a very distinctive and easily described flavor. It tastes like "cake" to me. Delicious, of course.

Okay, well I've never had one that tasted anything like that.

Oh man, I LOVE red velvet cake. Even Starbucks has red velvet cupcakes down here. We made the smallest (top) layer of our wedding cake red velvet, and it ran out before the other two flavors did.

Last week I had a rough day and I really wanted to treat myself to a Starbucks red velvet cupcake, but when I got there they were sold out! The next day DH had a team build at Magic Kingdom and he brought home the most gigantic red velvet cupcake I have ever seen from the Main Street Bakery. YUM!

they still have the red velvet cheesecake? OMG i love that stuff. wonder if i can get DH to go to Cheesecake Factory this weekend.... :thumbsup2

Lara

Sam's has a frozen Cheesecake Factory Red Velvet Cheesecake!! We got one at Christmas...I was in cake heaven....:cloud9:
