Red Velvet Cake?

Red cake just seems wrong somehow :)

 Obviously, you have never spend an hour rubbing Red Velvet cake on your teeth and scaring your mother.

One time I happened upon a GREEN velvet cake at St.Patrick's Day. Now THAT was just nasty.

If you want a delicious Red Velvet Cake experience, go the The Cheesecake Factory. OMG............:cloud9:

:lmao: and

Actually I could go for a nice piece of carrot cake with cream cheese frosting right now! :cloud9:

Actually, I read something interesting recently...Red Velvet cake originated during WWII when Cocoa was on rationing and women couldn't make "real" chocolate cakes. The original Red Velvet cakes were much less "red" then they are today.

I just love anything to do with WWII and had never read this. I might make some Red Velvet cupcakes for Valentines and make them really "red".

I eat so much junk that really, a little food coloring won't kill me. Maybe if I eat them with champagne, the alcohol will kill the effects of the food coloring.

How timely this thread is! I just read an aticle about red velvet cake yesterday.

http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/food/8-essentials-for-authentic-red-velvet-cake-2451699/

It's about the 8 essentials fo true, authentic red velvet cake....

2. The cake must have red food coloring; beet juice does not add the right kind of red.

4. There should be pecans. (This was news to me.)

I have to disagree with both of these. I don't like nuts on my Red Velvet cake and i don't use food coloring. My cake is always a great shade of deep red and it is one of my best sellers. :goodvibes

I definitely agree that it mUST have cream cheese icing. Putting a white buttercream icing on Red Velvet cake just negates the entire purpose of the cake. It's just WRONG. LOL!

I knew I was marrying a redneck when...

He asked for a grooms cake in the shape of a woodchuck, red velvet, of course!

(He's always been a hunter, and that was his critter of choice, at the time. And, yes, it was delicious...)

Oh man, I LOVE red velvet cake. Even Starbucks has red velvet cupcakes down here. We made the smallest (top) layer of our wedding cake red velvet, and it ran out before the other two flavors did.

I tried to make a red white and blue red velvet one time. I should have looked at a color wheel first because my "blue" cake came out green. However silly it looked, it still tasted the same :)

I'll be in the minority here and champion homemade buttercream frosting. :woohoo:

Anything goes with alcohol! ;)

Love it! :lmao:

I want cake. Any type of cake! :lmao:

Not cake, but I have an awesome Irish soda bread in the oven right now, it smells so good!

My mom was a young married woman in WWII. I never asked her about that one. I did ask her about Coca Cola cake. Same thing. Sugar was rationed and they had to come with something sweet, so they used Coke. She said it is really good.

I was just in Costco yesterday sampling their Red Velvet Cake. The server was an elderly woman who told me that "in her day" it was called Red Devil Cake.:confused3

I love red velvet cake but alwasy leave out the red food coloring. Red food coloring in large quantities makes my 3 y.o. ds puke! Plus we really don't need all that stuff in our bodies anyway!

It doesn't make any of us sick, I know that some it does. If I am eating "Red" velvet cake, I want it red. Really we don't need anything in the cake in our bodies, flour, sugar. etc.

I realize that some can't take it, but for the rest of us. Who cares, it has been around for ever. Everything in moderation people, you will be fine.

I am usually accepting and loving of all cakes but for some reason I just can't fall in love with Red Velvet:confused3. It tastes like nothing to me (and I've tried every Red Velvet cake that is sworn to be "the best"). It doesn't taste like chocolate but it doesn't taste like anything else. I guess it's ok, not like I really need to love it, it just baffles me why I love EVERY other type of cake but not red velvet. It does look pretty though.

I see I just didn't know what real Red Velvet cake was - I thought it was red devil's food - I have to try the "real thing".
