A few months ago, most Disney counter service restaurants stopped their wide distribution of plastic lids for drink cups. According to many cast members who work in custodial or at these establishments, this has led to more frequent drink spills by guests. To better combat the issue, Disney has switched to Solo produced drink cups that are a little sturdier than the old Dixie brand cups when they don’t have a lid on.

This lack of lids and cups bothers me more than it should! It drives me crazy. I like to carry a drink with ice in it in the stroller cupholder and sip on it for a while after we eat, and with no lid this is impossible. Plus it's much harder to carry multiple drinks. Again, I don't know why, but it irritates me a lot more than I feel it should. I want my darned lid and straw (the straw can be paper, I don't care, I just want one!)!! Sometimes it's little things more than big things that get under your skin and make lasting impressions >:(.

OK, I feel a little better now, until my next trip and I don't get a lid and straw :D I keep meaning to take a pile with me in by bag from locations that still have them (as of our last trip), but of course never remember.

I work for a composting company, too bad we're up north or I'd propose that as a solution :P

There are compostable plastic cups, lids, straws, utensils etc that are functionally the same as regular plastic that people are familiar with, but made of plant based materials. This would allow everyone to have the convenience of single use items while solving the plastic waste issue that everyone is eager to alleviate. Of course, they'd need a commercial composting facility to accept it all, but they could do all their food waste too and reduce their total waste outout (and therefore emissions and even waste disposal cost) by a whole lot. That'd be a lot for a company to take on, but if anyone could do it I bet Disney could.

GREAT. Solo cups? What's next? People playing beer pong on the People Mover?

UGH.

So, anyone besides me planning on packing straws and lids on their next vacation? I read on the link provided by OP that standard coffee lids will fit these cups. I'd much rather toss a couple in my purse than spill drinks. We're not the most graceful, even with lids :)

Better cups won't fix young clumsy kids or adults. Neither will a plastic lid.

Meh, a plastic lid helps a decent amount when you almost knock it over, or even if it isn't full and a kid (or adult :D) does knock it over it can stop it from all out gushing everywhere. Not always, but sometime. My kids are super clumsy with drinks, and while they aren't perfect the lids do help. However, the real reason I want the lids is for my convenience carrying them around, not to help if my kids bump them :-).

So save plastic by not having a flimsy plastic lid, but add more plastic by getting sturdier cups. LOL

Yup... It's a great way for companies to pat themselves on the back without actually doing much to really help, plus ends up just inconveniencing their customer base in the process. Real change takes just a liiiitle bit more thought behind it I'm afraid!

Because Dixie brand cups are so much more classy?

I'm pretty sure it's the overall negative or party connotation that red solo cups have, like in the Toby Keith Song :D. That's what popped into my head when I read the thread title, I was surprised when I saw the picture and they looked just like the old disney cups - I guess I was expecting, well, a red solo cup :upsidedow Or maybe you were just being funny as well, and I just explained a joke....

No lids, no sale. I'll bring a plastic Dasani water that costs me $.15, instead of paying them $4.50, and add iced tea mix. But seriously, why don't they do what Starbucks is pushing towards, a strawless, recyclable lid that you can sip from or place a paper straw in?

It probably costs more than the old lid/straw combo. And they're most enthusiastic about saving the planet when it also saves them the other kind of green.

Does anyone know if sit-down restaurants will be offering straws, either paper or plastic, upon request?
