Not sure if this has been posted already?

Oceola county in Florida, a popular holiday destination for Brits, sees its first Red Light Camera activated this week according to WFTV 9. This will soon be followed by nine others in the next two months. There are already Red Light cameras in the city of Kissimmee, Osceloa, but these new cameras are in the un-incorporated areas of the county. The cameras look very different to the ones that are common in the UK, but all locations will have a “Photo Enforced” warning sign just before the junction.

Prior to issuing a ticket the infringement will be reviewed by a deputy in the county sherif’s office to ensure that the car did in fact go through a red light. The evidence for review includes not only still images of the event, but also video.

The fines for running a red light are reportedly $158, of which the State of Florida receives $113 and the local town takes $45. It is unclear what the cut for the camera company, ATS, is assumably it comes from the funds received by the State. There is an appeals process but should it be found against you the fine will increase by $125. Should you be in a rental car and receive a ticket then the rental company will automatically pay the fine and debit your credit card and there will be no chance to contest it.

Although these red light cameras are not on the Disney property they are situated in the area around the resorts where many holidaymakers drive.

Seen 3 or 4 of them this trip but couldn't tell you where, covered way over 1000 miles, not sure where they were.
My TomTom has warned me at each one.

the drivers in the orlando area are some of the worst in the USA, so here's hoping this helps improve things!

I agree with Reid, driving in Florida is far easier than UK and much more pleasurable.
On a few occasions this trip I commented on how slow drivers go compared to UK.
I find lanes are wider, parking bays bigger and traffic slower.
Yes you get the odd idiot but get many more here.

Driven once in Europe (Tenerife) 25 years ago, can't see me doing it again.

i compare orlando drivers to drivers in other parts of the US.
Orlando ranks right up there in terms of bad drivers (drivers who do really stupid and rude things - not necessarily speeding, but just really bad driving - as in tailgating, running red lights, passing inappropriately, etc etc)

if you want to see what good driving looks like, visit Michigan :)
and while you're there, plan on spending time on Mackinac Island - one of the loveliest places around. It's located in the staits of mackinac between the lower and upper peninsulas of michigan.
it's the perfect place to visit if you're afraid of driving in the US - no cars are permitted on the island :)

I hate the traffic lights over there - I am always worried that the car behind me is going to run into the back of me when the lights change as they expect me to keep going on amber. (I have had people overtake me on red and go through)

And I hate turning right on red - I know it is allowed (usually) but I still haven't worked out the best way to do it after all these years:blush:.

Hopefully the cameras will teach people to stop sooner.

Thankfully I haven't come across any problems with things like tailgating or running red lights, as I said I find the standard of driving over there better than here. Maybe I am one of the drivers you don't like Beth :rotfl2:
Turning on red is great, one thing I wish we would adopt here (turn left on red)

Wayne, it's quite possible that we're not really disagreeing. I've never driven in the UK, so perhaps UK drivers are so bad that even orlando is better :)
I never paid attention to the quality of the driving in london, i'm too busy trying to remember not to be run over by the cars coming from the wrong direction.
Though i will concede that the drivers in paris are far far far far far worse than in orlando

I never paid attention to the quality of the driving in london,

Drivers in London are in a different league. I am a very confident driver, London driving frightens me. So much so the last time we went down (Easter) we took the train and I hate public transport.

i had a car service that took me from the airport to reading..
and then a few days later from reading to london....(and a few days after that from london back to heathrow)...
again, i wasn't so much paying attention to how people were driving, but rather i was trying to understand the rules of the road....but i couldn't ..
i couldn't figure out the rhyme or reason of what lane you're supposed to be in, or where and how you turn left or right or where the lights were..
i was totally totally confused...

and as i sat there i again thought to myself - how do the brits manage to drive in orlando??????
