Both of my kids have the Sansa and love it. In fact Hubby and I each have one also. Easy for the kids to use. Very inexpensive. We've been pleased with ours.
I got a 1 gig player at TRU last night for $14. I can't look it up right now (but it's pink) because there is a 9 y/o recipient in the room and she'll sure as heck spot the TRU page. She wanted an ipod and if she takes care of this one and doesn't lose it I may get her an ipod for her birthday in May. TRU had several that weren't too expensive.
The new iPod shuffles are relatively inexpensive. Their under 60$ at most stores. They are easy to use, last a long time, but are extremely small, so if your daughter loses small things, it may not be a good suggestion.

My daughter has a Samsung one that was under $50 on sale at Best Buy. It is easy to operate and to charge - she likes it because there is a screen that shows her what song is playing. She had a mix stix before and she hated that she couldn't see what song was where.
