Recommend the Best Book

Wow!! ::yes:: thanks for all the responses!! Keep them coming :)

I see so many on here that are favorites of mine too. The reason I didn't ask for specific category was I'm open to it all.

I'm currently reading Hawaii by James A. Michener. I'm surprised no one said that. EXCELLENT book!!

Thanks again for all your posts!!! anyone else?

All time favorite:

Roots by Alex Haley
Gone with the Wind by M. Mitchell

Classics:
To Kill a Mocking Bird by H. Lee
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Read recently:
The Host by Stephanie Meyer (sci fi)
Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer (romance)

I have this on my shelf, and want to read it before we go to Hawaii in May. I am daunted by its size!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is it hard to get into? Maybe I will bring it on my WDW trip next week!

My top five-

1. The Christmas Sweater by Glenn Beck. Yes, before anyone says anything about Glenn Beck.... read this book. It's fiction and is written in a similar style to Mitch Albom's "The Five People You Meet in Heaven." Glenn's novel really made me stop and think about alot of things in my life and I think even if a person doesn't like Glenn personally, they should still read this book.

2. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. This is vampire fiction at it's finest (better than that Twilight stuff any day). This book is about the original vampire- Dracula. It's part history and part fiction. Two thumbs up.

3. Lisey's Story by Stephen King. This is King's best work, in my opinion. It's more of a psychological thriller than a horror story. Basic plot is that of a woman still trying to overcome her grief after her husband's death. Though it's a much bigger story than that.

4. Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. I love the book even more than the movie. It's a piece of perfection. The book and film are pretty much the same, but the book goes into more detail- alot more detail! Crichton was a wonderful author and I miss him everyday. :(

5. Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Move over Twilight.... this series is the best ever written and nothing else can top Harry. That's pretty much all I have to say. :)

But as stated, my all-time favorite is The Christmas Sweater by Glenn Beck.

To list 2 favs that I didn't notice listed to this point:

Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" trilogy
L Ron Hubbard's "Battlefield Earth"

JRR Tolkien's Middle Earth novels are all incredible.

An honorable mention goes to Frank Herbert's "Dune" series

This one is a little different, written by my cousin's husband & newly out, but it is getting good reviews:

This is his first work of fiction. First book was called "My Own Country" about his life, and a movie was made for Showtime based on the book.

Here is a link to his first chapter - you can read it & see if you like: http://www.abrahamverghese.com/images/chapter1.pdf

I'll be honest and say it was a little hard to get into but just keep reading. It's really great.

Have fun in Hawaii. Haven't been back since my honeymoon in '96 and dying to go back. Have a great trip!!

Good Grief!!! Can you ask something a little less difficult to answer?

In order <deep breath>

The Bible

Gone With the Wind

The Scarlet Letter

Wuthering Heights

Great Expectations

The Stand

The Green Mile

The Secret Garden

All Harry Potter Books

Airframe

All the above books I have read more than once & will read again.

Currently I am reading "Uncommon" by Tony Dungy & so far it is quite an inspirational book.

To Kill a Mockingbird, of course...

She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb

It by Stephen King

Different Seasons by Stephen King (Includes the stories of Apt Pupil, the Shawshank Redemtion and The Body, which the movie Stand by Me was based on, and another haunting story)

So hard to pick just one, so I'll have to do like everyone else and choose several.

The Grapes of Wrath
by John Steinbeck(although I truly love all his books)
On the Road and The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac
The Mists of Avalon by Marian Zimmer Bradley
A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole
The Hotel New Hampshire by John Irving(Prayer for Owen Meany and The Cider House Rules are pretty high up there as well:thumbsup2 )

I've read every post and jotted down some books for myself to read based on the recommendations here.

I was surprised not to see this book mentioned at all

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblebski

Also Loved

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
The Poisonwood Bible

For non-fiction, I would have to say "Freakonomics" was a fascinating book. Easy to read and really makes you think. :thumbsup2

I didn't read the whole thread so forgive me if Winterdance by Gary Paulson has been mentioned. Non-fiction account of his running the Iditarod. So gripping and funny and heart-wrenching! His typical genre is young adult fiction, but when the man tells a real story he is mesmerizing!

I have to keep buying the book again and again because I give it away to friends to read and pass on.

I should mention that I usually enjoy fiction more than non-fiction.

Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird has been mentioned several times but that's okay. It's the best book I have ever read.
