Recommend the Best Book

I decided to take this question as asking not for my favorite book, but for those stories which I felt produced the greatest examples of literature encapsulated in a single novelization.

Shogun
The Killer Angels
Ender's Game
Neverwhere
His Majesty's Dragon
The Clan of the Cave Bear (not the series, though)

The best book I've ever read (and my favorite) is To Kill a Mockingbird. I re-read it just about every year. Scout and Jem and Atticus seem like family to me and I like to visit them. ;)

Although I do agree with so many others that Diana Gabaldon's books are right up there on my list, too, along with Jane Eyre and so many other books.

That is so funny bc I also feel exactly the same. Never have I read a book as good as To Kill a Mockingbird, and also love Jane Eyre. I read them as young teen initially many years back and never have I read better, and occasionally reread. I've never read the Diana Gabaldon's books but now that I see you like the others, I'm going to try them. Thanks. ;)

My all-time favorite books:

  1. The Mists of Avalon
  2. Pride and Prejudice
  3. Little Women

If you can stand medically gruesome stuff, I'd reccomend The Hot Zone by Richard Preston, but I warn you now that it's highly medically gruesome.

That's your disclaimer. :upsidedow

This is one of my ds(11) favorite books.:crazy2:

I have to give 3 books:

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (go with the complete edition that includes all 5 books)

Catch-22

Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas

The Mayor of Casterbridge

I could give you a list a mile long if you just want book recommendations, but if you're asking for favorites, that's mine. I especially like the end.

Without a doubt for me it is "To Kill a Mockingbird".

Wow! I'm not the only Gabaldon fan! I was so happy that her series and The Stand by Stephen King are available on Kindle so I always have them available- I also have the hardcopies.

Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit! I had to read them by flashlight when I was in high school because I could....not....sleep.....with the books in the room.

Back to Gabaldon- isn't the character development amazing? Who on earth could they ever cast as Jamie Fraser in a movie (and keep the fans happy!)? The fact that they are in North Carolina now (my home state) thrills me (I live near New Bern!).

You're my book twin. ;) Diana Gabaldon's books are really wonderful. It's also been mentioned here but The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield is really reminiscent of Jane Eyre even though it's set in modern times. Not the story itself but the tone and the writing style. You might enjoy that one, too, if you haven't read it yet. Oh, and The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde is hilarious and features Jane and Mr. Rochester.

My very favorite is East of Eden by Steinbeck.

Little Women & The Time Traveler's Wife.

My 2 favorite series with a definite end are The Harry Potter series & the Dark Tower series.

I am reading that now!

It is hard to narrow it down so:

Top 3 Non-Fiction

1. The End of Faith by Sam Harris
2. A People's History of The United States By Howard Zinn
3. God Delusion by Richard Dawkins

Top 3 Fiction:

1. A Spell for Chameleon by Piers Anthony
2. Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
3. The Odyssey by Homer

Oh good, I bought this book for ds recently. I'll ahve to read it.

These Is My Words by Sarah Turner. It was the first book my book club read, and everyone loved it. I don't often re-read books, but I plan on buying this one to read every so often.

Another vote for "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold. It's just about the most original thing I've ever read. LOVE it.
