Recommend Good Sunless Tanning Lotion?

For sensitive skin which I have too I use Neutrogena's Healthy Defense which is SPF 45, UVA/UVB with Parosol 1789 and water proof. Available about anywhere. It comes in a white bottle with light blue lid.

Cindylouwho:
I just checked my bottle and I bought Coppertone 45 with Parasol 1789, contains UVA,UVB protection. On the ingredients Parasol was the first one.

Do you think it is ok for my kids?

I personally prefer to use Neutrogena because they are fragrance free and I don't spell like suntan lotion all day when enjoying indoor activities.

Thanks for the help.

I'm not going to comment on my preferred products, but I have to tell you that I am a dermatologist and I treat people with skin cancer every day.

What a great thread!!!!

Congratulations to all of you for being so proactive in preventing skin cancer!! I am so proud of my fellow DISers. BTW, I do agree with many of your choices. More information on skin cancer can be obtained from the American Academy of Dermatology and the Skin Cancer Foundation.

I know what you mean Renee! I am amazed at how active this thread became. I just wanted some good brands of sunless tanners and got 3 pages worth of information! This is great...thanks everyone for contributing and giving me good info. I am going to try the clinique brand first (no odor) and go from there if I don't like it. So many choices and now I also got good info about the sunscreens. I didn't know about the coppertone before. There are so many brands to choose from in the stores these days that it gets so confusing. Usually it is true you get what you pay for...but now always. It depends on what it is.

I have recently tried The Body Shop's self tanners and LOVE them! I found the color very natural for both the body and face.
I'm quickly becoming addicted to that store! Happy (fake) tanning!

I have a question....I have the sunless tanners down, and use them, but I'd like some recommendations on the best way to exfoliate. I can do that in the shower with a brush, but I'd like some other suggestions.

FYI:
*I bought a sample tube of St Ives Apricot Scrub and it did a really good job of exfoliating.
*Also, I tried Coppertone self tanner recently and although it did a good job, my legs broke out a little.
*Just tried Neutrogena sunscreen with Parasol 1789 on my DS9 and it did a great job.

Yeah! Another fan of The Body Shop! Great products!

Sorry I'm getting to this conversation so late, but my 2cents:

I have used countless self-tanners because I am freckled and SO PALE! (DH says I glow in the dark) I always exfoliate and swear by Clinique or The Body Shop self-tanners. Spray for the body and cream for the face.

If that is your picture w/ your posting, you do NOT look that pale....or do you have a sunless tanner on? If so, you look good! I have the clinique and clarins self tanners but haven't used much. Contemplating whether I should just do the mystique spray and get an even tan. How do you apply w/out being uneven or streaked...It;s hard to do the whole body, don't you think???

Thanks! I have a combination of self-tanner on and too much sun in St. Thomas (Champagne Catamaran -- I fell asleep on the 45 minute ride back without reapplying SPF but my legs got the worse of it).
Regarding the streaking, I think I've just done it so much that I've actually become quite good at applying without streaking. When you exfoliate beforehand, that minimizes the chances of streaking by a lot. I also find that the sprays are a lot more effective in preventing streaking.

I'll have to try a spray then....so far only used cremes/gels. The get expensive so I'll try next time. Have you ever tried the mystique sprays at the salons? My sister did it once but said she felt most washed away after she showered...and she waited more than the recommended time. Others swear by it and go regularly. I might try it before our cruise.

To avoid streaking, apply along with lotion - I think I read about that in this thread - I tried it and it works great!!!

It costs 25.00 an application which usually lasts for about a week. It's affordable for a once in a while tan I guess. But more expensive than the bottles.

If you use a moisturizer w/ the creme, does it matter which kind of lotion?

I like Coppertone's Endless summer. It works really well, and doesn't stink like Neutrogena does!

Although I tan reasonably well, as I get older, I am more concerned about skin cancer and would like to try using a sunless tanner this cruise. Not real dark, just light tan. Can anyone recommend a good one that you've tried before..and one that looks more natural not orange in color...

thanks in advance

I've tried them all... The best fake tan I've ever gotten was getting sprayed! It's awesome. Takes 30 seconds in a spray booth. No streaks, you get an even all over tan. Love it!!

I liked using "Toma's Tan perfect" on my last cruise. You can buy it online, HSN, sometimes walgreens, etc. However, the lotion formula CAN get old and change color. The newest formula is a mousse formula. So, it goes on smoother and stays fresh in the can! You do need to exfoliate and use applicator gloves. But, it has some coloring in it so you can see where it goes on and how thick. I thought this was the most economical and natural tan I have used. Even if I was pale one day and tan the next my closest freinds would ask how I tanned so quick when I was so fair!!! NO ORANGE SKIN.

The tanning booths with the spray on tanner in our area are from a company called MYSTIC TAN. You can find them online and look for locations in your area. It seems like they are only available in more populated areas. I really want to do this for my next cruise!

I know this is a dumb question but for those of you who use spray-on tanners, do you spray them on and let it dry or do you have to rub it in first? My main reason for this question is I thought this would be the best way to "tan" those hard to reach places such as one's own back.

By the way, I did the Mystic tan before my last cruise and it worked great but they warned me not to go in chlorinated water or it would come off.

Thanks!

Just wanted to mention something about the ingredients in sunblocks. I live in Florida and am always concerned about my kids and my very fair DH. There is a product called Bull Frog sold here and I have been told to use the one that specifically includes the ingredient titanium dioxide. It is clearly labeled on the front of the bottle and it is a physical sort of block. Banana boat also makes one in their kids line which is just as good and is a little less expensive than Bull Frog. The Florida company NO-AD (as in NO ADvertising and they donate to NO ADdiction programs) also makes one with titanium dioxide for even cheaper and it works well also. When you are going to the caribbean where the sun is much more intense than where you currently live it is worth it to use a good sunscreen especially on your kids. Even if you don't reapply as often as you should on the kids (we all lose track of time on the beach!) it will keep them (and you) from burning so badly.

If you can't find these at home any kmart, walmart or drug store around the port should sell them.
