Wondering if they show the movies which are in the theaters onbaord on the televisions in the staterooms. One of my kids is not OK with going to the theater (too loud/dark), but he really wants to see the new Star Wars movie. I'm really hoping they have it in the staterooms; otherwise he'll have to wait till it comes out on DVD.

Typically, the first run movies are only in the theaters. Don't think it'll be in the On Demand choices. Another note - On Demand movies are only on the Dream & Fantasy.

Thanks! We'll be on the Fantasy 2/6 SWDAS sailing. I guess he'll just have to wait for DVD! :/

I haven't been on a Star Wars cruise, but on the 7 night cruises and more I found after the Premier has been on in the WDT it then goes to the cinema and on the TV as well.

I highly doubt it will be on the "on-demand", but I will be on the Dream next weekend and I will check for you!

Why not just see it when it plays in the theater? That doesn't cost anything extra and is the same quality as a movie in theaters.

Concur with kelseyledare - We were on the first SWDAS and it was not on demand but it was playing quite a bit in both the Walt Disney Theatre and the Buena Vista Theatre. That said - there was a pretty nice catalog of movies on demand including Pixar and Marvel! We had a complimentary upgrade to a 1-bedroom suite and enjoyed the on demand movies quite a bit on those wonderful 42 inch screens in the suites! Got caught up on a view movies.

The OP states why in her post:

OP, you may want to look into theaters in your area that offer sensory-friendly showings of movies. Or you could try a showing in the theater on the ship and sit near the end of an aisle where you could exit quickly if he can't handle it.

Thanks! He is getting closer to being able to see movies in the theater as he gets older but it's still been a struggle. He LOVES the Minions and so we took him to see that this summer. I ended up sitting on the floor with him for the whole movie in the hallway just outside of the theater so he could listen to it and peek around the corner to see the movie at times. We stayed there until 5 minutes before it ended (after the climactic final scenes), and then he jumped up and ran inside and sat with his twin brother and dad and asked for popcorn. :) I figure we'll give it a shot onboard and see if he will be OK with it.

I don't know what theater chains might be in your area, but I know AMC offers sensory friendly screenings. Check your local movie listings or call some theaters in your area to see if they offer this. If he can get acclimated to being in the theater with the lights up and the sound turned lower, then that might be a good stepping stone to trying a regular screening.

Have you tried using an ear protection headset for him? It would muffle the sound, but not completely eliminate it. I have noticed the theater doors open during some showings, maybe that would help with the darkness issue, if you could set in the very back.

I'll try that if we can find one. Right now the struggle is getting him past the front door. As soon as he knows we are at a theater, he starts to cry.

Yeah, he wore my Bose noise cancelling headphones during the Minions movie. I also let him use my phone to play with so he could be distracted from it if he needed to. In addition to the darkness and noise, he also doesn't like not knowing what is coming next. Even at home he watches new movies from under a table or around a corner in case something surprising or scary happens so that he can hide in the kitchen if needed.

It's a process. We are used it (he has ASD, so these quirks are nothing new.) :)

My heart goes out to you and him. Maybe ask if he'd like to try it for 2 minutes, then set your alarm. I babysit a 4 yr old, he will go into "meltdown mode" when I say (whatever) "time" is over. Unless, I set an alarm. When alarm goes off, he's fine with moving onto whatever is next. Hope he can manage to at least see part of it, if he loves all the Star Wars hype.

The timer is a great idea. I often use a timer for my DD who is on the spectrum and it works well. In the morning when we are rushing to get ready, she doesn't like me giving her reminders to get things done, but I can hand her a list of everything she has to accomplish and a timer counting down the time she has to complete the tasks and she does fine.

One thing about being on the ship is that there are multiple showings of the movie, so maybe you could go the first night with the goal of staying just a couple minutes. Then if he does well, try for longer at the next showing.

Hi, I was on the Fantasy Dec 12 2015 cruise (where they premiered the force awakens) and I recall them making an announcement at one of the evening shows that there would be a "family friendly" viewing of one of the movies in the theater early the next day. I can't however remember which movie it was, but I do remember the CD saying the lights would be up, the volume would be lower and to feel free to move around with your children during the show. I was surprised because it was the first time I recalled an announcement like this.

I would suggest when you embark asking guest services about this or even making the suggestion they do this for one of the Star Wars showings. It may not happen on your cruise, but it certainly couldn't hurt and may help in the future.

ooh! I hope they do this for SW-TFA! Thanks!

One thing I have seen too in the Walt Disney theater, during some of the shows they have one of the doors open at all times so it is easy for guests to get in and out quietly. I would bet that if you explained the situation, they would let you be in that area so he could hide behind the doors if he needed too. Also with the theatre being so big it might not feel as claustrophobic as a normal theatre.
