No, you should be having someone record the gift and name. At the very least, secure the card or gift tag to the gift for reference. "Thank you for the lovely gift" is a cop-out.
Cop out? Wow, so picky! "thank you for the lovely lotion. I will use it on my legs every day with glee". is that better?

I honestly cant believe how picky people are with thank you notes.
